Fantasy General II – Invasion

Fantasy General 2 has certainly taken a long time to get here. The original turn-based Fantasy General game was released all the way back in 1996. So, to say that people have been waiting for a very long time for this game is a massive understatement.

The Game Review

In case you did not know, Fantasy General 2 is a game that is all about tactics and thinking about what you are going to do. The fantasy setting that the game has is awesome and you are fighting for the very soul of the land of Aer. It is a great premise and the actual campaign is very well done and makes you care about what is happening.

The campaign has over 30 scenarios for you to get through so it is going to keep you busy for a very long time. You take control of the barbarians of the highland clans and the different special units they have like the berserker and the stag riders which are fun to command. You are fighting against the oppressive force of the empire and their army of the undead!

The gameplay is all about these gripping turn-based battles that really do make you think. The game throws over 70 different unit types at you which you can command! The coolest thing is the large heroes that have much more power and abilities and also look really amazing too.

It is not just as easy as clicking an attack and watching it happen. You have to put a lot of thought into what you are doing. Winning a battle in Fantasy General 2 can be just as much about dealing with a certain type of terrain, getting your positioning right and even your troops having good morale. There is always something to consider before you strike and that is a huge part of the appeal of the game for me.

The weapons, armor, and magic that you need to manage are very interesting. I like the progression system in the game and found that putting together an army that I felt could take on the world was not just fun, but it felt super rewarding when my decisions paid off. Of course, on the flip side of that there were many times I got my tactics wrong and I paid for it.

Both your units and your heroes will develop new skills and abilities as you upgrade and level up. This is another example of the great way the game is always moving you forward. It is pretty cool how you can have a rather average recruit in your army, grow into a powerful warrior. Training is an important part of developing your army and it is up to you how you train them.

As well as the campaign, you can also test your skills against the AI and play around with the other faction. This is a lot of fun and really shows just how deep the gameplay of the game is. Of course, multiplayer is going to be huge and testing your wits against other players is going to really show just how much of tactical mastermind you are.

I think that Fantasy General 2 has been well worth the wait. This is a very in-depth kind of game, but it is also fun and very rewarding. It is the kind of game that you can easily sink hundreds of hours into and not get sick of it. You are free to play the game any way you want and that is why I feel it will appeal to long-time strategy game fans and newcomers alike.
