Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is a game that many people had their eyes on. This is from the same people who created the phenomenon that was Pokémon GO, Niantic! So, it is fair to say that along with the fact that Harry Potter is one of the biggest franchises on the planet mean there is a lot of expectations with this game.

The Game Review

So, the million-dollar question is of course, is Harry Potter: Wizards Unite just Pokémon Go, but with wizards? Well, I would have to say that if you have played Pokémon Go, this is going to feel very familiar. However, I do actually mean that in a good way. If you liked Niantic’s pocket monster catching fest then you will probably get right into this too.

One of the things that surprised me was the story. For a mobile game, the lore behind the reason you are doing what you are doing is pretty darn deep! The basics are that after the events of the movies, the wizarding world is in danger of being “exposed” you and other wizards need to capture these things that could expose it.

What you are actually trying to “capture” are called Foundables and these Foundables are being held by a Confoundable! Once you find one on your map, you then have to trace out a spell to capture it. This is actually really cool and more fun and interactive than the capture mechanic that Pokémon Go had.

There are boss battles and bigger characters that you can fight on your own. Or like their previous game, you can team up with others to take them down. So far, I have fought off Death Eaters and large spiders and there is a ton more iconic Harry Potter creatures and characters that you deal with.

Speaking of that, fans of the series will really be in heaven here. I am not the biggest fan of Harry Potter, but the fan service here even I can see is through the roof. You interact with famous characters and the world is far more detailed than what Pokémon Go offered and that is something Harry Potter fans are really going to love.

There is more to Harry Potter: Wizards Unite than just capturing creatures and fighting off bad guys. You can also collect items that can be used to make new potions. Find portkeys, there are even skill trees you can work through and so on. I was actually surprised by the amount of content that this game has.

My main issue with the game was that it did not really do a great job in explaining to me all the different things I could do. Also, while decking out your wizarding home is great, I feel that they could have made your “avatar” more special rather than just being based on the colors of your house. You can take a fun photo of yourself, but from what I could tell no one else actually sees this.

I was pleasantly surprised with Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. I think they have actually done the franchise justice and I am sure fans of the series will get right into it. From a “game” point of view. I do feel that Niantic has done a good job in beefing up the gameplay of what Pokémon Go offered.
