Today we are checking out the SkyShowtime app which is a somewhat new streaming service available in over 20 different European locations. It is such a freaking weird app mixing Sky which is well known all over Europe and then Showtime which is an American thing, but this app is not available in many countries that have Sky in Europe and is not available in America at all!

The Program Review

So, what the heck is SkyShowtime? It is a streaming service that is taking content from Universal, DreamWorks, Sky, Peacock, Nickelodeon, Showtime, and Paramount+. No doubt, this is a great selection of places to take content from and they have said that there will be a lineup of SkyShowtime originals too.

There is already a pretty stacked lineup of great content here. You get some cool Paramount+ originals such as the epic Yellowjackets and Tulsa King. The TV show selection is solid and a good way for many people who do not have Paramount + in their region to get access to these shows legally.

As this is also something that has Sky involved. Sky Originals are also included with SkyShowtime such as The Rising and The Midwich Cuckoos to name a couple. They also have a lot of stuff for kids thanks to the fact that most of the best modern and classic Nickelodeon shows are included here.

Movies as you would expect are also a huge part of this with many of the big hits from Paramount over the last year such as Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion being on the streaming service. They seem to have movies from all genres so there you will certainly not be struggling to find something to watch.

The current pricing for SkyShowtime is going to be around the 7 Euro mark. That puts it in line with what most of the other streaming services are charging. Many people felt that Paramount + was a streaming service too many and I was one of those people who felt that way!

I feel that SkyShowtime is the Paramount + for Europe and I just do not see this having enough of the wow factor to make this worth subscribing to. If you already pay to have stuff like Disney Plus, Netflix, or even a Sky subscription, there is just not enough meat on the bone to make this a streaming service I feel is a must-have.

Also, the app needs some major work. As I write this there is no 4K or Dolby Atmos support! How the heck do you release a streaming app that has movies like Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion and not offer 4K and Dolby Atmos? That is just crazy to me and I am sure it will be added at some point, but it should have been here from the start.

As much as I love Yellowjackets, I could not recommend someone subscribing to SkyShowtime on a constant basis just for that. It is a streaming app that just does not need to exist and the whole way it has been rolled out and the way the UI and the way it shows programming is out of date makes it feel like an app from about five years ago!
