Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials

I had pretty high hopes for Netflix’s Seven Dials. This is a mini-series that is based on a classic Agatha Christie story. I have enjoyed many of the other adaptations of her work over the years, and I thought that this looked like it could be a fun whodunnit kind of show. Also, one of the characters is played by Helena Bonham Carter, whom I am a pretty big fan of.

The Movie Review and Story Impressions

To start with a positive, Seven Dials is only three episodes long, so it has a pretty quick pace to it, and it is not a huge commitment. However, I had a bit of a hard time sticking with this, and I think had it been a full eight-episode kind of series, I probably would not have seen it through until the end.

The classic 1920’s British setting is cool, and for those who like stuff such as Downton Abbey you will get a kick out of the setting and the costumes. The way that the characters talk is also pretty fun to, so very old-timey British, and I know that is something that many people do like.

Seven Dials Plot and Mystery Setup

As this is a whodunnit, we have to be careful about what we say about the plot. Lady Caterham is renting out her lovely estate to a steel tycoon for a party for him and his associates. It is here we meet her daughter, Eileen, who is known as Bundle. Bundle is hopeful of hooking up with one of her brother’s friends at this shindig.

Well, one of the guests is known for always sleeping late. A prank is panned to hide several alarm clocks in this late sleeper’s room, but when people go to check on him, he is found dead. That right there, folks, is the murder we need to solve, and it is made more intriguing by the fact that all but one of the alarm clocks have been posed and set to different times. The “seven dials” is a real mystery indeed.

Final Thoughts on Agatha Christies Seven Dials

I have to be honest, this one did not click with me at all. To be fair, once we get to episode two, things move at a pretty good pace. However, that first 30 or so minutes felt like it went on forever, and I never clicked with Bundle or any of the other characters. Usually in a show like this, I am doing my best Batman or Sherlock Holmes to try and figure out the mystery, but here, I just did not care enough to do so.

I would not say that it is horrible or anything like that, but I think you can tell that they felt like this was a hard story to tell, and that is why it is just a mini-series instead of a full set of eight episodes. Hey, I am sure that for some people, this was a rip-roaring good time, and my wife did seem to enjoy it way more than I did. However, this is one series that I am confident I will never watch again. In all honesty, this was not the best Netflix original for them to start 2026 with!
