Alien

Alien is a 1979 sci-fi horror film, directed by Ridley Scott and considered by many to be one of the most influential films of all time. This first Alien film gave way to a long-running franchise of sci-fi sequels and merchandise, reeling viewers in with its unsettling story and creepy atmosphere.

The film follows a crew of an industrial transport spaceship, which comes into contact with an unknown life form. Drenched in suspense and a terrifying antagonist, Alien earns its spot in cinema history as a titan of the horror genre.

The Movie Review

The film centers around the ship called the Nostromo and its seven-person crew. On their return trip back to the Earth, the team is awoken from cryo-sleep after the ship’s onboard computer detects a distress signal. Per the policy of the company they work for, the team must set out to investigate, eventually discovering a derelict craft on a small planet.

Hidden inside are unspeakable horrors, horrors which make their way back to the ship, continuing to stalk and terrorize the crew. Trapped on the ship with only the cold death of space outside, the remaining members of the Nostromo must play a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Alien packs a lot of suspense, horror, and intrigue into its nearly 2-hour runtime. The story feels grounded and personal despite its futuristic setting, thanks to some great performances from the cast. Although every single character is played to near-perfection, certain characters are exceptionally memorable.

Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is an unexpected heroine, standing out as one of the best female lead characters in all of cinema history. The action and special effects are also top-notch, resulting in some iconic and truly terrifying sequences. Thanks to the excellent use of practical effects, the action scenes remain just as awesome to watch as they were in 1979.

In addition to its great characters and high-quality special effects, Alien excels due to its great script and excellent story. Not only are the characters believable and acted well, but the dialogue is remarkably free-flowing and natural.

You’ll quickly find yourself admiring the various quirks and charms of these complex characters, which only makes their potential demise that much more worrisome. The story itself is also particularly well-paced and contains some surprising twists and turns.

Whether you’ve seen Alien before or are completely new to the franchise, you owe it to yourself to check out this iconic sci-fi flick. It’s a highly re-watchable and consistently entertaining movie, packed with thrilling action, nail-biting suspense, and endearing characters.

While some might find the pacing a bit meandering at times, Alien goes the distance to display the true isolation and terror of outer space. The fantastic direction by Ridley Scott and excellent performances by the entire cast make this classic 70s flick well worth your time.
