Coming six years after the first movie, Big Momma’s House 2 is a sequel that I am not sure anyone was asking for! I thought that the first Big Momma’s House had its moments and it got a few laughs out of me. However, this sequel flat-out sucks, and probably the best thing I can say about it is that at least it is better than the third movie…. Was Big Momma’s House something that needed to be a trilogy?

The Movie Review
Trying to Recapture the Magic
I always felt (and I could be wrong about this) that the first movie felt like they were trying to capture the magic of Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor. To be fair, Martin Lawrence is awesome as Big Momma and he has some amusing moments here, and I love how he fully commits to the role.
Family-Friendly Fare?
There is not one huge thing that is wrong with Big Momma’s House 2, but there are many things that all add up to make this a movie I simply do not enjoy. To start with, this feels like a far more family-friendly kind of movie than the first one, almost like a spy caper mixed with Mrs. Doubtfire.
Malcolm Turner Returns
Martin Lawrence once again plays the role of FBI agent Malcolm Turner. After the events of the first movie, Martin has left the field and has a desk job to be closer to his wife Sherry and his stepson Trent. By the way, I get that this is a comedy series and not to be taken seriously, but in what universe would Sherry have found Malcolm pretending to be her estranged grandmother something she could get over?
Undercover Once More
It does not take too long at all before Malcolm once again gets pulled into the field. There is a strange computer worm/virus that could infiltrate the FBI database. The man who they feel is responsible for this has a wife and three kids and of course, Malcolm going undercover as Big Momma to get close to the situation is deemed the best thing to do.
Lackluster Execution
Ugh, this is just bad in every regard. There is a bit of slapstick humor that may get me to crack a smile, but this feels like a very soulless kind of movie. I get the feeling that they thought the movie would have “heart” thanks to Malcolm bonding with the kids and helping them with the various issues that they have, but it just comes across as half-assed and even emotionally manipulative, trying to force you to feel something for these characters.
Conclusion
I am not saying that the first movie was this edgy masterpiece, but it had the novelty of Martin Lawrence dressed as a woman and I do feel it was a bit more “adult” than what we get here. We have already seen Martin Lawrence as Big Momma so that novelty is gone, add to this a barebones “spy” plot with forced family drama and you have a movie that is just not all that much fun to watch. I could happily go the rest of my life without seeing this again!
