I am going to start by saying that Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva is the most visually stunning movie of 2022…. And yes, I saw Avatar! This is a Hindi movie and it is one of the best Hindi movies I have seen. I am so glad I made the effort to go and see this in the theatre as it had a rather short run where I live.

The Movie Review
This is an action fantasy movie and from what I understand it is pretty deeply inspired by actual mythology which I think is really cool. However, I am sure if you are familiar with that it is great, but as someone who was ignorant of this, I still had an amazing time watching this movie.
What we have here is kind of like a superhero origin story. Our main character is a man called Shiva, he is a DJ and wants to find purpose and love in his life. He meets a cute woman called, Isha and he falls in love with her at first sight. These two have fantastic chemistry and the “love story” part of Brahmastra Part One: Shiva was something I liked as I enjoyed both characters.
Now, Shiva is not your typical man. It turns out that Shiva is an Astra which basically makes him a living weapon and he has all these cool abilities like being able to control and wield fire. As far as a hero’s origin story goes, this handles it very well, nothing feels rushed and it gives you all the “story” you need to understand what is going on.
Shiva does not have as long as would be ideal to get to grips with his power! You see there is an evil queen called Junoon who wants to get her hands on the three pieces of the Brahmastra which will help her unleash an entity known as Dev, which could destroy the entire world.
I liked her as a villain, even if the movie does have stretches where she is not featured. Junoon is kind of maniacal and I dig that. Her motives are pretty clear and easy to understand. I got a real kick out of this scene where she creates an army of zombie farmers!
Brahmastra Part One: Shiva moves at a very brisk pace and the action scenes are some of the best I have seen in the last few years. The Astra effects where there are these large creatures on the screen are just mind-blowing! I wish my theatre showed this in Imax as I am sure it would have been even more epic. There is eye candy all over the place and it truly is one of the best-looking movies that I have ever seen.
Now, Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva is actually part of a new cinematic universe called the Astraverse and this is the first of a planned trilogy of movies. The company that makes this is actually owned by Disney so I hope that they get the money to make this happen as it does end on a cliffhanger.
Sometimes a movie will be too preoccupied with setting up a universe, the recent Mummy movie is a prime example of this and they do it at the expense of the movie you are watching. That is not the case here, this is very much its own contained story, but there are so many ways that you could see a sequel going!
I had an absolute blast with this and if anything, I wish I went to see it twice. You know, I think I am going to flat-out say, this is my favorite Hindi movie! Even the way they present the subtitles on the screen is very well done, they never get in the way of the action. No matter how you watch it, just make sure you do as this is fantastic!
