Bride of Chucky

Bride of Chucky would be the first Chucky movie since 1991! This was the first movie that I saw in theatres and I was all in on this. Bride of Chucky has a very different tone to the other movies, it is much more of a comedy and it parodies much of what we love about Chucky. I actually like this movie and would put it at number 3 on my best Chucky movies list.

A Unique Take on the Franchise: Bride of Chucky Review

This movie has nothing to do with the Andy Barclay saga and is instead the start of a new series, but it is still a sequel to Child’s Play 3. When I think of this movie it is not Chucky that springs to mind, it is Jennifer Tilly who plays the ex-girlfriend of Charles Lee Ray, Tiffany that makes this movie for me. I am a huge Jennifer Tilly fan and she is so much fun in this movie.

Tiffany manages to get her hands on the mangled Chucky corpse after he was destroyed in Child’s Play 3. Using a voodoo ritual and some handy sewing skills, Tiffany brings Chucky back to life so that they can be together again. Well, things go wrong and Chucky ends up killing Tiffany and putting her soul into another doll!

The Journey of Chucky and Tiffany: A Plot Overview

All hope is not lost for our murderous duo. They need to make their way to New Jersey where Charles Lee Ray is buried so that they can get an amulet that they can then use to become human again. How the heck do two dolls make their way to New Jersey? Tiffany gets her neighbor Jessie to agree to drive the dolls to the cemetery.

Unexpected Twists in Bride of Chucky

There is a secondary plot here. Jessie has a girlfriend called Jade (played by a young Katherine Heigl) and her disapproving and interfering police chief Uncle Warren Kinkaid wants her to have nothing to do with Jessie. It is awesome how we have John Ritter playing such a jerk in this movie!

Jessie and Jade decide to use the money Tiffany is giving them to get married, but Chucky and Tiffany start killing anyone who gets close to them. It is very amusing how both Jade and Jessie think that the other one is doing all the killing. Most of the kills in Bride of Chucky are done for laughs and the special effects are cool.

Bride of Chucky: A Comedy of Horrors

Eventually, all is revealed and Chucky and Tiffany take our two lovebirds hostage to New Jersey. The back and forth with Chucky and Tiffany and how they bicker like an old married couple is what makes this movie. It is a movie that always gets a lot of chuckles out of me and to be honest, I think leaning into comedy was a good idea here.

While I like the movie, I can see how for some people it is just very dumb, but that is part of the charm. As I said, it is almost like a parody of the Child’s Play movies and that is something I got a kick out of. Plus, the sewn-together Chucky doll and the blonde hair big boobed Tiffany doll are done very well. Bride of Chucky is a good movie and sadly, none of the Chucky movies that follow this surpass it which I guess is a spoiler for our other Chucky reviews.
