Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

For some people I am sure the Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie came out of nowhere. However, some parents know this character all too well. Captain Underpants is the creation of Dav Pilkey who has written some great kids’ books such as Dog Man, Dumb Bunnies and of course Captain Underpants.

The Film Review

This is a movie that was done by the good folks at DreamWorks. I along with my son love the stuff that these guys put out. David Soren was the director and that put the movie in safe hands as he had worked on Madagascar and Turbo, both of which were a lot of fun.

Before we talk about the actual movie, we have to talk about the voice cast. Kevin Hart, Thomas Middleditch, Ed Helms, Nick Kroll, and Jordan Peele are top talent and they do a great job here. Hart plays the role of George, Middleditch Harold and Ed Helms is Captain Underpants himself.

While on the surface this may look like a silly kid-friendly superhero movie (and in a way it kind of is) Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is far more than that. Harold and George are best buddies and the love to come up with their own comic books, most noteworthy of their creations is Captain Underpants! They actually run a business selling their comic books to their school chums.

Another thing that Harold and George love to do is play pranks on their principal, Mr. Krupp. Well, one prank goes too far and he decides to split the boys up! They have a “Hypno Ring” which they use to turn Mr. Krupp into… Captain Underpants! At first, it is all fun and games, but Captain Underpants starts causing havoc so the boys take him to their tree house headquarters.

Here they realize that when he gets wet, he turns back into Mr. Krupp and that by snapping their fingers they can turn him back into Captain Underpants. The pair decide it is better to keep him as Captain Underpants, but they tell him he needs to pretend to be Mr. Krupp as his secret identity.

Things appear to be going good, well as good as they can in this case until the villain of the movie appears, Professor Pippy P. Poopypants. Nick Kroll is the voice actor for him and he is awesome. Professor Pippy P. Poopypants is sick of people making fun of his name so he is going to get rid of laughter, but not on George and Harrold’s watch and they call Captain Underpants into action.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is a really fun movie. It is full of lots of silly laughs and it pulls them off very well. It is proper grade school humor and that is why it is a movie that kids will fall in love with. I do think that the fear of two codependent best buddies having their friendship ripped apart is quite an interesting and real idea for kids to deal with. I am sure it is something many kids would be scared of happening.

If you want to watch a fun and silly movie that is going to make the kids laugh, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is perfect. It is not quite as “smart” as some of the other DreamWorks stuff, but it is still a good family movie that you guys can watch together.
