Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

My wife was so excited about the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina! Based on the Archie Comics and the early 00s series, the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a darker take on the iconic character. I thought what they did with Riverdale was awesome so I was very interested to see Sabrina get the same kind of treatment.

The Movie Review

There are two seasons that are split into four parts as well as a couple of crossovers with Riverdale so this is not a massive commitment to watch. The premise of the show is great, teenager Sabrina Spellman is coming of age, but she is a witch so she must learn how to deal with her powers.

She is raised by her two witch aunts, the more uptight Zelda and the more chill Hilda, but both have Sabrina’s best interests at heart. She has a good group of friends with Harvey and Roz and I think that they do a good job of making the side characters interesting as well as having their own things going on.

The first season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is fantastic. I liked how dark, gothic, and mysterious it all was. From dealing with hell, fear, witch hunters, and more, this show has a ton of awesome horror-like elements that make it a very captivating show and not a show that is just for kids…. Well, at least it started off that way.

I was all in on the first season (which was split into two parts) and thought it was fantastic stuff. However, part 3 was such a huge decline in not just quality, but the tone of the show as well. It went from this dark, gothic, and kind of edgy horror-themed show to just another teenage show with singing and dancing!

It also has a very lackluster ending that just seems to come out of nowhere! There were some good ideas here such as the other Sabrina from an alternate timeline, but the further the show went on, the less I liked it. I knew before I got around to watching the final part that there would not be another season and I was ok with that.

This is one of those shows where if it had gotten a new season, I am pretty sure I would not have bothered watching it as the show really did lose me with its final part. The acting in the show is good to be fair and my wife got a huge kick out of the cameos for the Sabrina the Teenage Witch show that was on in the early 00s, but even she lost interest towards the end.

I think if the show had been more “teen” and silly and had the musical stuff right from the get-go, it would not have been as bad. However, the tonal shift was something that I felt was really jarring. I know that Riverdale got wild and crazy with stuff like time travel and superpowers, but it managed to pull it off, the shift in tone here did not work for me at all. If you really want to watch the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina I would recommend watching that first season and then just calling it a day.
