The Plot
Released on 7th August 2018, Crazy Rich Asians revolves around the story of two lovers, Rachel Chu and Nick Young, who travel to Singapore to attend Nick’s best friend, Colin’s wedding.
And now here comes the kicker.
After Nick books first class tickets for both of them, Rachel is surprised to know that Nick actually hails from a very wealthy family.
The two arrive and meet Colin and his fiancée Araminta, after which they take part in their individual bachelor parties. At Araminta’s bachelorette, Rachel is confronted by a woman known to be Nick’s ex who claims that she is a gold digger.
But it gets better.
At the same time, Nick’s mother Eleanor also disapproves of Rachel, saying that she is not worth her son’s time.
Meanwhile, at Colin’s bachelor party, Nick reveals to Colin that he is also planning to propose to Rachel soon despite his family’s disapproval.
After finding out the truth about her father and the abusive relationship between her parents which forced her mother to leave China, Rachel runs away and spends her time with her best friend Peik Lin.
Nick finds out about Rachel’s discontent and chases after her despite his grandmother’s threat to disown him.
Nick proposes to Rachel to marry him but to his surprise, she initially refuses.
Rachel then confronts Eleanor and explains how she refused Nick’s proposal only to prevent herself from getting in the way between him and his family.
She then boards the plane with her mother only to find Nick proposing to her again, only this time, with his family ring, signaling that his family approves of Rachel. Rachel accepts as the two host an engagement party in Singapore.
Crazy Rich Asian Review
Crazy Rich Asians is a delightful story which combines good old-fashioned comedy topped up with just the right amount of romance.
One of the main features of this film is how the female lead characters are all displayed as powerful women in different dynamics.
Director Jon M. Chu specifically focuses on the character of Rachel by portraying her as a strong young enthusiast who has to constantly deal with the horrors of her own past as well as the constant nagging by her mother-in-law to be.
Rachel’s character is simply shown as a smart, graceful, and innocent girl who is willing to make her boyfriend happy at the cost of her own marriage. Chu sends a very strong message to those couples who are emotionally struggling, saying that there is always hope. Apart from its meaningful, yet fantastic filmmaking, Crazy Rich Asians is the first Hollywood film since 1993 to feature an all-Asian cast.
The main score of the film was composed by Brian Tyler and was released on 10th August 2018. During the production process, Chu also assembled a list of songs in order to create a new piece based on that specific list.
In short, Crazy Rich Asians is a beautifully pictured sequence that is guaranteed to lift anyone’s mood who watches it. Apart from its empowering message, the sequence contains catchy songs, some brilliant performances, and most importantly, the random one-liners that is bound to force out a chuckle!
