Even though it came out a few years back in 2018, I just got around to checking out the action thriller, Den of Thieves. Brought to us by Christian Gudegast and featuring a blockbuster cast led by Gerard Butler, Den of Thieves is a really cool and fun action movie. I had a great time with this and while you could argue it does take itself too seriously, if you are in the mood for a kickass and badass action movie, you can do way worse than this.
How to Download Den of Thieves
Den of Thieves was released on January 19, 2018. You can download or stream the film from a digital platform such as Google Play, Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV. Click on the Download button at the end of this review and make your choice.
The Movie Review
The movie takes place in LA and we have a group of ex marines who are led by a guy called Ray Merriman and they plan to rob the Federal Reserve Bank. Turns out there are a bunch of old bills that are due to be shredded and they plan on hitting the bank and taking the bills for themselves.
Pablo Schreiber and Gerard Butler’s Intense Face-Off
One of the things that I got a huge kick out of here was that Ray Merriman is played by Pablo Schreiber who I loved in Orange is the New Black. I think Den of Thieves did a great job of showing people that this guy had leading man potential and that he could be a badass action star as well. The movie is pretty much Pablo Schreiber going head to head with Gerard Butler and that is pretty awesome in my opinion!
Gerard Butler plays the role of Detective Nick O’Brien, better known as Big Nick. Big Nick gets wind of this group of thieves and thanks to an “informant” tries to catch them before they can rob the bank. There are some real fun twists and turns in the movie and the ending scene where you think that movie has gone one way, but it was something else all along, is really well done.
Den of Thieves vs. Heat – A Worthy Comparison?
I have heard that Den of Thieves is regarded as a slightly less intelligent version of the awesome movie, Heat and that is truly the best way to describe this movie. That is not a knock on Den of Thieves at all or me putting Heat up on some kind of action/thriller pedestal. It is just a similar kind of movie and I think that is kind of awesome. It very much feels like the kind of movie that would have come out in the late 90s or early 00s if that makes sense.
Should You Watch Den of Thieves?
You know, I really do not have many complaints about Den of Thieves at all. I was entertained from start to end, but I did watch this just before I went to see Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. I think if I had seen this when it came out or a year or so before I saw the sequel, I probably would have liked it even more. The way I watched it, there was no way I could not compare it to the sequel as I saw them so close together and while I liked this, the sequel I feel is a better movie in pretty much every regard. Hey, this is still a great time and if you can watch it back to back with the sequel, I highly recommend that you do just that!
