Divergent is a downloadable science fiction action film produced by Red Wagon Entertainment and Summit Entertainment. The film is the first edition to The Divergent Series and is based on the novel of the same name by Veronica Roth. It is directed by Neil Burger and features a cast consisting of Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ashley Judd, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Kate Winslet, Miles Teller, and Tony Goldwyn.
Released on 18th March 2014, Divergent takes place in a dystopia ruled by four factions namely Abnegation, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. The story revolves around Beatrice “Tris” Prior who is revealed to be a Divergent -an individual who possesses the DNA abilities of all four factions equally.

The Film Review
The Plot
Despite her father being an influential member of the Abnegation government, Tris decides to join the Dauntless faction. She is forced to hide her Divergent personality as well in order to survive and thrive within a particular faction. On the other end, Beatrice’s brother Caleb joins Erudite.
After initially struggling to keep up with the rest of the group, Tris eventually manages to improve her skills through the help of her close friend and transfer instructor, Four. Tris finds out that Erudite is planning to topple the government after which she informs her brother who refuses to believe her.
After passing all the tests, Tris is enrolled as a full-time member of the Dauntless but realizes that Erudite, by providing them with a mind-controlling serum, is planning to use them to execute members of Abnegation.
Tris’ Divergent personality prevents her from being controlled which thereby allows her to get to Four who also is revealed to be a Divergent. Tris and Four’s true identities are revealed after which they become captured. Tris is freed thanks to her mother who soon dies after taking a bullet hit as they try to escape.
Tris manages to escape and invade the Erudite headquarters where she encounters a controlled Four. She frees Four from the serum and the two then proceed to confront the Erudite leader Jeanine. The duo uses a sample of the mind control serum on Jeanine to cancel the program, thus ending the invasion.
The Movie Production
The chilling, yet inspiring film’s visual effects were mostly handled by the VFX company Method Studios. VFX supervisor Jim Berney who had previously worked on Batman Forever, The Matrix Reloaded, and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers) explained how the film took approximately 1024 visual effects shots. These shots were divided and used in different parts of the film including the train, the pit, and the zip-line sequences. Most of the film’s shooting took place in Chicago.
Divergent: the Music
The official soundtrack of the film was composed by Junkie XL on 18th March 2014 and was released by Interscope Records. The soundtrack album sold 10,000 copies in its first week after release.
The Movie Success
As far as box office ratings are concerned, Divergent was received fairly well as it managed to gross over $289 million in total. The film was praised for its relatively unique concept but was criticized for its poor execution.
