Dolittle is one of those movies that I feel in years to come will be more appreciated than it is now. This is yet another movie to star Robert Downey Jr (Tony Stark/Iron Man) and if you look online all you will see is debates about his Welsh accent. That is a shame as this is a family movie that is nowhere near as bad as people are making it out to be.

The Movie Review
The story is not the most exciting in the world, but I feel it sets things up for Dolittle to have a reason to go on an adventure. The movie is set in the 19th century in England and Queen Victoria has become very sick. Dolittle knows of a rare fruit that grows on a faraway island that can cure her. He is tasked with getting the fruit and of course, he takes his animal friends along with him for the ride.
The adventure aspect of the movie is ok for me. The idea of Dolittle and a bunch of talking animals going on a quest is great for a family movie. What I think holds the movie back is the “villains”. You have Dolittle’s father-in-law played by Antonio Banderas and his rival who is kind of the “anti- Dolittle” is played by Michael Sheen.
I already mentioned Robert Downy Jr., Antonio Banderas, and Michael Sheen, but this movie is stacked with talent both on the screen and with their voices. Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, John Cena, Tom Holland, Craig Robinson, Selena Gomez, and more all lend their voices to this movie.
The best part about Dolittle for me was the animals. They look fantastic and the CG work is just awesome. It is not just the fact that the animals looked great, their different relationships with Dolittle are what really made the movie for me and also for my son. Which brings me to my main point about Dolittle.
This is most certainly a movie that was made with families in mind. If you go into this expecting an “epic” like Pirates of the Caribbean or Indiana Jones, you will most certainly be disappointed. I found that this is a movie that plays things pretty safe and that does not mean it is bad.
Speaking of bad, people are quick to point out how bad Robert Downey Jr.’s Welsh accent in the movie is. I think that is a massive exaggeration and it is not bad at all, actually, Robert Downey Jr. is one of the best parts of this movie for me. He is easy to like and there is quite a bit of depth to him.
I originally saw Dolittle in the theatre with my son and we had a good time. Would I spend the money to buy this on Blu-Ray or DVD? Probably not if I am honest with you, however, I would certainly say that I would watch it again if it were to come to Netflix. For a fun movie to watch with the kids, you could do a lot worse than Dolittle.
