Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale

I enjoy Downton Abbey, but I would not say that I am a super fan of the series. However, the two movies, Downton Abbey and Downton Abbey: A New Era, especially the second one, were quite entertaining. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is the last instalment in the series…. Supposedly, I would not be shocked to see this rebooted or them go back to the well for another movie at some point.

Where to Watch Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale

The Movie Review

The team behind the camera is the same as it was last time. Series creator Julian Fellowes once again handled the script, and Downton Abbey: The New Era director, Simon Curtis, is the director for this third and supposed final installment. The core cast have all returned, as well as a few new faces that fit in quite well.

Thoughts on Downton Abbey’s Final Story Arc

I remember when I heard that A New Era was going to be a thing, and I thought that a second movie was unnecessary, but I ended up really enjoying it. With Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, I do feel that this was going to the well one time too many, and I did not find this anywhere near as much fun as the previous movie. However, I will say that my wife really enjoyed it, and other Downton Abbey super fans seem to think that this brings the series to a close very well.

Key Plot Points in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale

The last movie had the South of France and the fun plot with the movie being shot at the house, and the whole thing with Guy Dexter and Thomas Barrow. This time around, the main plot is about the scandal of Mary’s divorce from Henry and the effects it has on the family in the community. There is also a subplot with a swindler trying to get the family fortune as well. Look, to be fair, nothing here is bad, but it just did not grab me the same way that the previous movie did.

Character Highlights and Missed Opportunities

I loved the stuff with Guy and Thomas, as Dominic West and Robert James Collier have great chemistry. This was not in the movie as much as I would have liked, and I found myself losing interest as the movie went on. I never fully checked out or was looking at my watch, but by the time the movie ended. I was ready for it to end. Still, they did a fun montage with the cast of the series and the previous two movies, who were not in this one. In that regard, it certainly felt like this was the end for Downton Abbey, but as we all know, money talks.

Is This Really the End of Downton Abbey?

To be fair, I can see why someone would say that Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is a great way to bring the series to an end. At the same time, I honestly think they give themselves an out to have Mary running Downton Abbey in a new series or a new movie, if they decide that there is more money to be made from this franchise. If you liked the show and the two other movies, you will like this.
