Released in 2020, Enola Holmes is a fantastic Netflix original movie. It features Millie Bobby Brown who proves that she is a fantastically talented young actress in her first big movie leading role (check her also out in Stranger Things as Eleven or as Madison Russell in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong). Also featuring the likes of Henry Cavil (he’s The Witcher) and Helena Bonham Carter who you might remember as Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, this is a fun and wild family action/adventure/mystery movie that is entertaining from start to end.

The Movie Review
Set in the late 1800s, young Enola Homes wakes up on the morning of her 16th birthday to find that her mother, Eudora has disappeared! Enola is left with some strange presents that she realizes are actually clues! Her two brothers, Sherlock (yes Sherlock Holmes) and Mycroft plan on sending her to a finishing school for girls as their mother is not there to look after her.
You see, Enola is not your typical 16-year-old girl. Her mother taught Enola to be independent, smart, and tough so Enola decides to head to London to try and find her. It is a fun way to start the movie and seeing her use her smarts to sneak out of the house, and past her brothers was great!
On her way to London, Enola comes across Viscount Tewkesbury who has run away from home. Turns out that young, Viscount Tewkesbury is being chased after by a hitman, and Enola while on her quest to save her mother, decides to help him. I really like the chemistry between Tewkesbury and Enola, she berates him a lot, but you can also tell that she likes him.
It is fun seeing Enola come into her own as a detective and use the various things that her mother has taught her over the years to find her and keep Tewkesbury safe. There is a lot of action in the movie and also a lot of laughs as well. This could have been a pretty eye-rolling-inducing movie, but I feel they pulled it off really well.
Seeing her working hard to find her mother, putting it all together, and figuring out who wants Tewkesbury dead and why all make her a very compelling protagonist. The way that Enola will break the fourth wall and talk to the camera is something that I thought was handled very well and it made you like her even more.
While this is a family movie, I think that they did a good job of not making it completely obvious what was going on. You get a good twist in regards to who wants Tewkesbury dead and I feel that they really nailed the ending so that you want to see a sequel. Henry Cavil is awesome as Sherlock Holmes, but I do wish we got to see more of him and also Helena Bonham Carter as well.
Overall, Enola Holmes is a fantastic movie and a movie that I would have happily paid to see in a theatre. It is one of the better Netflix Original family movies you can watch as it offers something for the whole family. I hope that they keep making these movies as I feel like it could turn into a big franchise for Netflix.
