2003’s Bruce Almighty was a fun Jim Carrey movie, but did it really need a sequel/spin-off? Released in 2007, Evan Almighty is a movie that is just fascinating to read about. The production of this movie is insane and it is estimated that the budget when marketing is taken into account was 200 million dollars!

The Movie Review
Now, to be fair, Bruce Almighty was a pretty big box office hit, making a very nice profit on a much more modest budget. However, Bruce Almighty also had Jim Carrey as its star and while in 2007, The Office was very popular, Steve Carrell was not the household name he would become in the next couple of years, certainly not enough to drive your average movie viewer to the theatre, especially with how much money they needed to turn a profit on this thing.
Steve Carell as Evan in the Almighty Universe
Steve Carell reprises his role as Evan from Bruce Almighty. Evan was Bruce’s rival on the news station and now he has turned to politics, seeing him move to a small place in Virgina to be a congressman. Evan has moved with his wife Joan and their three kids. I love Lauren Graham, especially in Parenthood, but my goodness is Joan unbearable for most of this movie!
Morgan Freeman Returns as God
Morgan Freeman returns from the first movie as God, and that is pretty cool as everyone loves Morgan Freeman. Evan prays to God that all his political dreams will come true, and at the same time, Joan prays that their family will come closer together. Pretty much right away, things start getting weird for Evan.
The Start of Evan’s Ark Building Adventure
To start with, his boss, played by John Goodman, puts some real pressure on Evan to do what he wants, and he is a real jerk. However, animals start following him around, his clothes turn into old-timey robes, and he constantly grows a beard! The scene with him telling people about his beard keep growing back is hilarious. Actually, speaking of hilarious, the line from Wanda Sykes asking Evan if he fell down a mineshaft always cracks me up.
The Return of the Biblical Flood
That is not all the weird stuff that happens to Evan! A bunch of old tools and some wood show up, as well as several vacant plots of land. Eventually, God tells Evan that a great flood is once again coming and he is needed to build an ark for the animals. Like in the first movie, God is working in mysterious ways here and Evan ends up making the ark.
Family Themes in Evan Almighty
The family stuff and the message of being there for each other are well done in the movie. For example, I liked how Evan working on the ark got him to bond with his kids, but his mean wife Joan spoils that and requires divine intervention for her to stop being so mean and always on Evan’s case! Honestly, I really, really do not like Joan. It sounds so horrible, but he is the textbook unlikable nagging wife and, as I said, I love Lauren Graham!
Final Thoughts on Evan Almighty
To be fair, Evan Almighty is not a bad movie at all. It has some impressive special effects and it does have a few moments that are sure to make you laugh. However, it does not leave much of a lasting impression. Still, if you want something light and fun and also something the whole family can enjoy together, you can do way, way worse than Evan Almighty.
