You may have heard of a little movie that recently came out called Frozen 2! In all seriousness, this movie is a monster and is sure to be another surefire billion-dollar hit for Disney in 2019. I recently went to see the movie with my wife (who loved the first) and this is my honest spoiler-free review of the movie.

The Film Review
I actually liked the first Frozen. It had catchy music, fantastic animation and Olaf was pretty darn funny. The second movie builds upon the first in a very clever way and is a deeper and more fun and even emotional ride than its predecessor offered. For me, Frozen 2 certainly feels like it is more about Elsa than it is Anna, but that does not mean Anna does not get to shine.
Things in Arendelle are going great until something strange happens and forces the people to evacuate. Elsa, who has been hearing things and remembering a song/story her mother told her, has a feeling she knows what is up. Her along with Anna, Kristoff, Sven and of course, Olaf head to a mysterious forest to see if they can free Arendelle from danger.
Frozen 2 – the Plot
I really do not want to spoil the plot of the movie. However, Elsa really does shine here and her finding out who she really is and what she can really do, as well as the truth about her family is great stuff. Anna and Kristoff have great chemistry together and I can tell you that nearly every time that Olaf said or did something, the kids in the theatre I was in loved it and reacted big time.
For me, the story in Frozen II is much stronger than the first. That first movie did a great job of making you like these characters, but Frozen II makes you really care about them. I will admit, I mainly went to see this because my wife wanted to, but I had a good time and thought that it was a very well-made movie.
What it Looks Like
The animation is some of the best computer animations I have seen. The movie is not just “cold” like it is in the first and as a result, I think it looks far better. It for me has a kind of “Norse” look to the whole movie and that is pretty cool. The facial animations and the faces, in general, have more detail to them this time around.
The Music in Frozen 2 – Good or So-so?
As far as the music goes, it is once again great [Editor’s note: is it, Jason? To me, the songs really underperform, which is really hard to understand as the composers have not changed – they are still the same duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez]. Idina Menzel as Elsa has a truly amazing voice and Into The Unknown is a really amazing song and a high point of the movie. I really do not see anyone being disappointed with the soundtrack at all!
The Bottom Line
Overall, Frozen II was a fun time. It really does a great job in building upon the main cast from the first movie and Elsa in particular really develops as a strong character. I really do not see anyone who enjoyed the first Frozen movie being disappointed with this.
