The Film Review
Released on 23rd February 2018, Game Night follows the story of a competitive couple consisting of Max and Annie. The couple have trouble in their relationship when Max finds out that his attractive brother Brooks is coming over to town to visit.
The Plot
After Brooks arrives, Max hosts his friends and announces that they are going to compete in a murder mystery game. Unimpressed with his younger brother, Brooks claims that he has a more realistic murder mystery game that can begin at any moment.
Suddenly, a couple of masked men enter and kidnap Brooks. Max and the rest believe that this all part of the game. All of the guests play along as they figure out the clues. Max follows the clues one by one and becomes the first one to solve the murder mystery.
As he goes over to the hiring company to claim his prize, it is revealed that Brooks had actually been kidnapped in real by a man named as the Bulgarian. The gang then follow Brooks’ GPS signal and manage to find him. They escape where Brooks reveals that he is not what he seems in front of Max. He confesses that his life is a mess and that he lives off selling illegal items to numerous collectors.
It is revealed that the Bulgarian is after a list of people under witness protection. They follow the trail which leads to the location of the Bulgarian. Naturally, they become surrounded by the terrorists until Max’s neighbor, Gary, shows up and helps them take out the evildoers.
Gary reveals that he had planned all of this as a result of Max and Annie not inviting him to their weekend game nights. In a twist of tale, however, Gary is unnotified of the existence of an egg containing a list. Suddenly, the real Bulgarian shows up and steals it from the gang, injuring Gary in the process.
The Bulgarian tries to leave through his private jet however, Max and Anne travel to the airport and prevents him to leave, thereby knocking him out and tying him up.
The film ends with Brooks being put under house arrest, Annie finally becoming pregnant, and Gary being re-invited to their weekly game nights.
Game Night Production
In a year where superhero films have bombarded the box office cinemas, the viewers finally get to witness a comedy film which is really difficult to come by in terms of quality.
One of the main aspects is how the director makes sure that the overall story isn’t a cliché like most comedies. The movie has a surprising bit of plot twists as every time the viewers believe that it’s over, another jaw-dropping twist in the tale occurs which.
Apart from the action itself, ‘Game Night’ has another unique factor in relation to the camera angles set throughout most of the film. The filmmakers directly set up cameras in positions which enables transitioning from scene to scene, making the viewers believe that the whole film itself is like a big board game being played by different characters.
Overall, from the appealing story to the hilarious punchlines, ‘Game Night’ defines the term, entertainment.
