The Film Review
Halloween (2018): the Plot
As per the real-time timeframe, the movie is set 40 years after the faceoff between Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. It is directed by David Gordon Green and features a cast consisting of Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, and Virginia Gardner.
The film begins as Myers can be seen in a rehabilitation hospital, under the care of Doctor Ranbir Sartain. Myers’ condition apparently seems to have halted as waving his murderous mask in front of him does no effect. Meanwhile, Laurie is seen living a stressful life, mainly due to the post-traumatic effect that was caused by her encounter over four decades ago.
She has also managed to train herself physically to prepare for her second faceoff with Myers, which she believes, is inevitable. Meanwhile, Myers’ transport vehicle crashes as he escapes and returns to his original state, thereby killing numerous random people that come in his way. His cereal killing spree leads him face to face against Laurie, confirming her suspicions.
Myers manages to flee whereas Laurie warns her daughter and her husband to take refuge in their secure house. On the other end, Doctor Sartain informs the police and joins them as they arrive and subdue Myers.
However, in a twist of events, Sartain turns against the police officer by murdering him in hopes of getting to witness Myers’ true mental illness taking shape. His dream is short lived as Myers soon ends up killing him as well mercilessly.
He then escapes on a police vehicle and breaks into Laurie’s fortified house. A series of action sequences take place where Myers kills off Laurie’s daughter’s husband before being trapped by them in the basement. Laurie and the rest escape as they set the house on fire. The film ends with the camera focusing on the burning basement with Myers nowhere to be seen.
The Movie Production
In 2015, the sequel Halloween film was announced by the writers, specifically claiming that it was a recalibration and not a reboot. Filming then began on January 2018 in the city of Charleston, South Carolina.
Although the film is particularly more hardcore in its contents compared to the original sequence, it is still mainly dependent upon suspense and jump scare techniques. Fans have praised the director for exploring Laurie’s character development in terms of her psychological issues.
It has also received support for adding hints of nostalgia by explaining how Laurie’s previous encounter with Myers changed her as a person.
Halloween (2018): the Score
John Carpenter, who previously provided scored for Halloween I, Halloween II, and Halloween III, was chosen once again to compose the score for this sequel. The score album was officially released on 18th October 2018 where all the music was composed by John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter, and Daniel Davies.
The Bottom Line
Overall, Halloween blesses its viewers with a solid follow-up storyline and some hardcore, yet intriguing scenes. Although it has received mild criticism for relying too much on jump scares. Nevertheless, the film is entertaining to watch.
