The first four Halloween movies are great, and I recently talked about how much I loved Halloween 4: The Curse of Michael Myers and how it started the Thorn Trilogy. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers was a mess. it was impressive how fast they got it made, but it was still a mess. Still, Halloween 5 underperformed at the box office and was a critical mess, meaning that the sixth movie was in development hell for many years.

The Movie Review
A Long-Awaited Return Falls Flat
Halloween 5 came out in 1989, but Michael Myers would not return until 1995! You would think the extra time they had with this movie over the previous one would help, but that is not the case. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers is not a good movie and the most notable things about it are that this was the movie debut for Paul Rudd (Romeo + Juliet, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Night at the Museum, Ant-Man, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) and it was tragically the last movie for Donald Pleasance as Dr. Loomis who passed away a few months before the movie was released.
The Thorn Cult: A Confusing Mythology
Set several years after the events of Halloween 5. The man in black from the last movie who was just there and never explained about is back. The man in black is actually part of a cult, centered around Michael Myers and how he is tasked with killing his bloodline to save humanity….. it is a mess, makes no sense and as a premise, it is lame.
A Bloodline Curse That Misses the Mark
The whole cult around this curse does nothing for me at all. This mysterious man in black, whose reveal is pretty lame, by the way, has taken Michael and Jamie and locked them up. Jamie gives birth to a child, and she manages to escape. Of course, Michael is released too, and he is compelled to hunt Jamie and her baby down to kill them as they are part of his bloodline.
Paul Rudd’s Debut and Donald Pleasance’s Final Act
This is a spoiler, but the movie is not good so who cares, Michael kills Jamie, but her baby ends up in the hands of Tommy Doyle, the kid who Lori was babysitting in the original Halloween and he is played by Paul Rudd. Tommy tries to protect the baby as the cult and Michael Myers close in on them.
So Bad It’s Almost Good?
Look, I love Paul Rudd. How can you not love Paul Rudd? he is one of the most charming actors around! However, his performance here is parody worthy as it is kind of so bad that it is good. You see that Paul Rudd charm shining through, but Tommy Doyle is not an all that interesting character at all. Plus, the even more supernatural tone of the story that this movie has fall flat and feel very forced.
Theatrical Cut vs. Producer’s Cut
Now, what I have just been talking about is the theatrical cut of Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, and they did actually release a version called Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers: Producers Cut, and that version is somehow even worse! Sure, some people say they prefer the extended producers cut, but that actually takes away a couple of the cooler kills and it goes even harder on the supernatural stuff and some of it is so freaking weird. It is a neat piece to have in your collection, but if you have to watch this movie, I would watch the shorter theatrical cut.
Ranking Halloween 6 in the Franchise
At the start of this review, I probably would have put Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers neck and neck with Halloween 5 in regards to which one is my least favorite in the franchise. However, on reflection, I think that this is a worse movie and if we are taking the Producers Cut into consideration, that is by far my least favorite Halloween movie. If I ever do a Halloween marathon again, I will watch the first four, skip 5 and 6, and then continue after that.
