Based on the popular 2001 book, House of Gucci is a movie my wife was very excited about. I knew nothing about Gucci before this movie, but as a fan of most of Ridley Scott’s work and the fact it had a stacked cast, I thought it could be fun. This is a movie that has a very mixed reception, my wife thought it was great, I thought it was just ok.

The Movie Review
You have to take into account that I know nothing about Gucci, so I just took the movie as it came. The plot is about Maurizio Gucci who is the heir to the Gucci throne with a 50 percent stake up for grabs. He meets and falls in love with “regular girl” Patrizia Reggiani. These two have very different backgrounds, but that is what made them a unique couple.
The first part of the movie where we see the relationship between Patrizia and Maurizio blossom was amazing stuff. From him loving her as she is, to his father seeing her as a gold digger. You really are rooting for these two to make it work and had they managed to stay away from the rest of the family who knows they could have.
What really made this awesome were the performances from Adam Driver and Lady Gaga. Both Driver and Gaga are amazing actors and even with their Italian accents, they deliver here. You can tell that Lady Gaga was having a great time with this and there is a huge reason why she has so many scenes showcased in the trailer.
The thing is, as great as her performance as Patrizia is, the latter half of the movie just falls flat. Her character completely changes and I just did not buy it. Again, I have not read the book or know anything about this so I know I am missing things people who are familiar with this will know. However, I feel it was the job of the movie to get me more involved and it failed to do that.
It is not because things were rushed either, House of Gucci comes in at around two and a half hours. The first part of the movie went by pretty quickly, but the latter half really lost me and I struggled to keep up. There is a great cast here with Al Pacino, Jared Leto, Salma Hayek, and Jeremy Irons to name some of the marquee stars. I think trying to give them all a chance to shine might have come at the expense of the flow of the movie.
I went into House of Gucci expecting a murder mystery type of thing. I was shocked that it was the first half love story between Maurizio and Patrizia that won me over most. I think that the movie is not terrible, but after that great start, it goes all over the place and I found myself having a hard time not just keeping track, but actually wanting to.
I think the performances of Adam Driver and Lady Gaga are great I really do. Even as a big fan of both actors, I have to be honest and say that I do not think I would sit through this again. Now, after we came out of the theatre my wife said she thought it was great, but she was familiar with the story so perhaps that is why I struggled to appreciate it?
