How can you not love Jerry Maguire? I would put this up there as one of Tom Cruise’s best movies. Released in 1996, this movie is timeless, and I have seen it several times over the years, and it always leaves you feeling happy. It is the perfect movie to put on if you are a little bummed out and need something to pick you up.

Jerry Maguire Movie Review: An Inspirational Story
Tom Cruise is Jerry Maguire. Jerry is a top level sports agent who after meeting with a players father who got injured as a change of heart and writes an open letter to his firm. Seeing a character have a change of consciousness like this early in the movie is great as he does seem like a slick and cool cutthroat guy, but we learn very quickly that Jerry has a heart and a good soul.
Rod Tidwell and the Heart of the Movie
Jerry is fired by his job for his open letter and he rushes to try and keep his clients. He ends up calling Rod Tidwell, played by Cuba Gooding Jr, who won an academy award for his role here. Rod is very eccentric and keeps Jerry on the phone for so long that all of his other clients are taken from him, but Rod says that he will stick with him.
Iconic Lines and Scenes in Jerry Maguire
This is where we get the iconic line, “Show Me The Money!!!” from. By the way, as well as show me the money, Jerry Maguire has so many iconic and quotable scenes. There is also the famous, “you had me at hello”. However, my favorite is “the f’n zoo is closed” when Jerry and Ray are having a heart to hear.
Dorothy Boyd and the Leap of Faith
As Jerry is leaving the office, he speaks up and tells people that he is going to start his own agency and asks, “who is coming with me?” Only one person, a single mother called Dorothy Boyd, played by Renee Zellweger, stands up and says she will go with him. Which as she has a small child at home, the freaking adorable Ray, played by Jonathan Lipnicki is kind of crazy and you can tell that she kind of regrets it.
Building Friendships and Redemption
Jerry only has one client and Rod can be very difficult. Rod needs a new contract and he and Jerry strike up a real friendship and the way that this grows through the movie is just so awesome to see. I am a huge fan of Cuba Gooding Jr and for me, this, What Dreams May Come in 1998 and Men of Honor in 2000 really cemented him as an amazing actor.
Love, Family, and Career: The Core of Jerry Maguire
There is more to this movie than just Jerry rebuilding his career. As well as Rod and Jerry growing close, he also starts a romantic thing with Dorothy and ends up becoming good friends with her son, Ray.. Jerry Maguire lasts a little over two hours, but this is one of those movies that just zooms by as it is so entertaining from start to end.
Final Thoughts on Jerry Maguire
I have to give this movie a perfect score, there is honestly nothing about it that I do not like. It even has a great soundtrack with Tom Cruise belting out Tom Petty’s Free Falling being another highlight of the movie. I had this on VHS in the 90s, I have upgraded it each time a new version has come out and while I do not see how they can go beyond the 4K release, if they do, I will upgrade again.
