The Movie Review
Let me start by saying that Joker is a very, very good movie. I was invested right from the get-go and by the end of it, I knew that I had seen something special. Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur/Joker absolutely nails this role and it is a performance that has so many levels to it that I feel it will seem even better on repeated viewings.
The movie is set in the 1980s and Arthur is a down on his luck clown for hire who has a medical condition where he laughs when he is under stress. You get the impression that there is something not right with him, but at the same time, you want to feel like there is a heart of gold inside of him.
His relationship with his mother is kind of strange and you never quite know what is real and what is in Arthur’s head. The Gotham setting is kind of cool and having characters like Thomas Wayne be in the movie is kind of interesting. By the end of the movie I was on the edge of my seat and thought it was excellent.
However, the more I think about Joker the more I start to question…. Why was this a DC movie? Look put down your pitchforks, I agree that Joker is a fantastic movie with excellent performances. My point is that you could have called this movie Clown and took out all the references to Gotham and it still would have been a fantastic movie.
I can actually see why some people would not like this movie. The Joker is for many is a character who is all the better for being an unknown entity. Just when you think you have the answers, he changes the questions. Joker as great a movie as it is does actually humanize him quite a bit and I am not really sure that Joker is a character that I ever really wanted to feel any kind of empathy for.
While Joaquin Phoenix is getting a ton of credit (and rightfully so) I do think there are some other standout performances here. Zazie Beets is impossible not to fall in love with as “the love” interest of the story. I also thought that Frances Conroy who plays Arthurs, mother, did an excellent job as well.
The Bottom Line
In all Joker is a fantastic movie and well deserving of all the praise and money it is raking in. I love the way the movie looks; the acting is great and the ending sequence gave me goosebumps. It is the kind of movie that I really think everyone should watch as it is something special. Still, as much as I like it, I must admit that I feel it could have been just as good without being a DC movie.
