Let me start by saying I am so glad that I was not familiar with the incredible true story that Last Breath is based on. If you already know the story here, this is probably still going to be a great movie. However, I was on the edge of my seat, worried to death if poor Chris was going to get out of this situation.

Last Breath Movie Review: Tension and Emotion in Equal Measure
Last Breath is a drama movie that is brought to us by Alex Parkinson who also directed a documentary about this story a few years earlier. The plot follows three deep sea divers who are in the North Sea off Aberdeen in Scotland to fix a gas line on the sea floor. During the opening of the movie I just kept thinking to myself, there is no way in hell I could do this job, and also, who the heck actually wants to do this job? The level of braveness required to do this is insane.
Meet the Cast of Last Breath: Finn Cole, Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu
Our first main character is a young man called Chris, who is played by Finn Cole. Chris is a young diver and is excited about going on this big job, they do a great job of making you connect with Chris right away. Chris seems like a very chill kind of guy, but his fiancé Morag, clearly understands just how dangerous his job is and that there is always a chance that he may not come back.
Chris has a mentor, the always awesome Woody Harrelson (he’s Haymitch Abernathy in The Hunger Games movies) as Duncan. Duncan is a seasoned vet when it comes to diving and he is the one who is going to be in charge of this team. Duncan and Chris clearly have a great relationship and he comes across as a really good guy, the kind of guy you would 100 percent want in charge of a situation like this.
We also have, Dave. Dave is played by Simu Liu and Dave is going to be the main diver along with Chris on the sea floor taking care of this very dangerous job. Dave is 100 percent all business and very serious, but he is an absolute hero and he was probably my favorite character in the movie.
The Crisis in Last Breath: A Life-Threatening Dive in the North Sea
As you would expect, this job does not go well. So many things go wrong, the weather is really bad and the ship’s stabilization software/tech, or whatever it is called, fails and they start to drift. The major problem here is that this happens while Chris and David are still on the sea floor trying to do their job.
Chris and David rush to get to a safe spot, but Chris’s umbilical cord which has his air and power, gets cut, leaving him stranded. Dave tells Chris to get to the top of the structure and he will come back and find him. We then have a rescue mission with Dave trying to save Chris and the ship trying to get back power in order to make it easier for Dave to do the job.
Last Breath Ending: A Shocking True Story That Deserves the Spotlight
Even though Last Breath is based on a true story, I do not want to go into spoilers about what happened, but I was mind blown by the outcome of this movie! I went on a massive deep dive (no pun intended) about the real situation as I found it so fascinating. This is just an incredible movie and one of the hidden gems of 2025 for me so far as I came into this with no real expectations.
