Locke & Key is a Netflix original series that made its debut early in 2020. Due to the pandemic, it took what felt like forever for the second season to hit, but it eventually did late in 2021. I think that this is a fantastic series and one that is a lot of fun and always keeps you guessing. It is based on a series of popular graphic novels which are way more graphic and violent than the TV show.

The Movie Review
The show is about the Locke family which consists of teenagers, Tyler and Kinsey, little brother, Bode, and mother, Nina. The Locke family move into the massive Keyhouse which has been the Locke family home for generations. The father of the family, Rendell is murdered and this is what makes the family move here.
I love the setting of Keyhouse. It is old, gothic and if you were a kid living there your imagination would no doubt run wild. The “gimmick” of the show is that there are all these keys magical keys that can open special doors hidden around the house. It is the younger brother, Bode who loves to explore and find the keys more so in the first season, but this is what ultimately leads the whole family to trouble!
The way that Bode uses the keys is way more fun, Tyler and Kinsey in the early part of the show use them for your typical teenager type stuff as you would expect. To be fair, I am sure this is what most of us would have done when we were teenagers if we had all these magical keys!
Bode gets tricked into helping an evil entity called Dodge. This is where the drama really starts to take place as we learn that Dodge wants to open a door that should well and truly not be opened! The show moves at a brisk pace and there are many great elements, one of my favorites was Kinsey using one of the keys to take away her fear which goes about as well as you would expect.
I feel that the second season never quite reached the excitement or mystery that the first one did. To be fair, Locke & Key season 2 is “good” however, I feel that by the time it was released, my interest had declined. Also, it had been so long, I ended up having to rewatch the whole first season again. Even with the recap video, Netflix had about the first season, I still felt lost and needed to watch it all again.
I get that those who were into the original graphic novels feel let down by this show. The graphic novels have horror, violence, and bloodshed and that was not shown in the TV show. Instead, we get a more family-friendly, almost “Riverdale” kind of show, which is not a bad thing, but original fans of the source material were understandably not impressed.
The first time I watched Locke & Key I loved it and was very excited for the second season, but due to events beyond their control, the second season took the better part of two years to come. Still, the first season is very solid and the second season while not as good did still manage to keep me entertained while I watched it.
