Love Hurts

I just talked about Heart Eyes and how for one reason or another, we were not able to see it while it was on at our local theatre. That made me remember “oh yeah, we went to see Love Hurts instead”. Love Hurts is a comedy action movie and a movie that I thought was pretty fun. It is completely over the top, ridiculous, and is certainly a case of style over substance, but sometimes, you just want to have fun when you are watching a movie and fun is the best way to describe this.

The Movie Review

Brought to us by Jonathan Eusebio in his directorial debut. When you see this movie and you hear that the director was a top stunt guy in Hollywood for years, it all makes sense. This is a movie that is 95 percent about the action and the action/fight scenes in this movie are pretty damn awesome and very entertaining.

A Cast Full of Familiar Faces

The movie stars the insanely likable Ke Huy Quan (The Goonies, Everything Everywhere All at Once) as a man called Marvin. Marvin is working as a realtor and he is a super nice guy, he is just trying to live a good and honest life. Oh, before I go any further, I have to talk about Marvin’s boss and mentor, Cliff who is played by Sean Austin. It is so awesome that we get a little Goonies reunion here with Data and Mikey.

Marvin, like most people, has a pass. Marvin used to work as an assassin/enforcer for his brother “Knuckles” crime empire and there was no one better at putting a beating on people than Marvin. After a job with a woman called Rose, a woman that Marvin had feelings for. Marvin walked away from his brother and tried to live a good life, something he was doing very well until Rose came back into his life.

A Love Story… or Manipulation?

I have to say, I did not like Rose, nothing against the actress, Ariana DeBose. Rose to me, came into Marvin’s life, and got him back into what he tried to escape from all for her own needs. Sure they fall in love and it is all happy, but really, she uses Marvin and completely blows up his life just so she can get what she wants. Granted, what she wants is to take down Knuckles once and before, but it does make her seem like a selfish asshole.

Intense Action and a Standout Supporting Character

What we get is Knuckles then sends an army of assassins after Marvin and Rose and Marvin has to go back to his old ways to take him down. There is a subplot with a woman called Ashley who is played by Lio Tipton and outside of Marvin, Ashley was the only other real memorable character. She is such a downer and looks at the worst in everything, I found her legit hilarious.

The best thing that Love Hurts has going for it is the action scenes. These are insane and fun action scenes with people taking hits that would kill a person and then just getting up from it! There is a lot of violence and even some pretty extreme gore here too, you will never look at your boba tea straw the same way again let me tell you that. Some people may say that the action is too over the top, but I think that is entirely the point. It just about gets to the point where it is a parody, but then they take a slight step back. In all, the action scenes were a ton of fun.

Where Love Hurts Falls Short

However, the rest of the movie, the love plot, and the revenge story are just kind of there. Love Hurts comes in at around 80 minutes so it moves at a blistering pace, but you just never really care about any of the characters. I am writing this a few weeks after I saw it and off the top of my head, I could not remember a single character’s name, even Martin’s! However, I did remember some of the epic action scenes that the movie had to offer.

Final Thoughts on Love Hurts

If you dig over the top action movies, I am sure you will have a fun time with Love Hurts. Just do not expect this to have any kind of impact on you as far as the story or characters go. Despite that, there is at least a thread that ties all these bone crunching, blood spilling action scenes together. This is one I probably will watch again at some point. I have a feeling this may become a bit of a hit when it hits streaming.
