Madea’s Family Reunion was released in 2006 and would be the second Medea movie and the first to have her name in the title. It is a sequel to Diary of a Mad Black Woman and I actually think this is not a horrible movie. I am a pretty big fan of Tyler Perry and while I do think there are some big misses in his Medea Cinematic Universe, I think this is not one of them.

The Movie Review
Do not get me wrong, Madea’s Family Reunion is not great, but it is not a big steaming pile of garbage either! As usual, Tyler Perry plays the role of the wise old street-smart Madea as well as a couple of other roles as well, most notably Joe. The movie is a direct sequel and takes place after what went down in Diary of a Mad Black Woman.

Madea’s House Arrest
Madea finds herself on house arrest. Madea violates the terms of her house arrest and finds herself in front of a judge! It seems like it could be some serious jail time for Madea, but she is thrown a lifeline. Madea can avoid jail if she takes in a teenager called Nikki who is pretty wild.
Nikki is played by Keke Palmer who I am a huge fan of. Nikki and Madea do clash at first, but Madea proves to be a good influence on her and Nikki takes the “teachings” of Madea to heart and tries to change her ways. The stuff with Nikki and Madea is by far my favorite thing about this movie.
However, the main story here is the drama with Madea’s niece Lisa. Lisa is going to be marrying a very wealthy man called Carlos. Carlos is very controlling and Lisa does not want to get married, but her mother Victoria is really pushing for it. The reason is that Lisa is a gold digger and has pretty much squandered the money that was there for Lisa’s future!
Balancing Comedy and Drama
While there are a lot of laughs here, Madea’s Family Reunion does also have some serious stuff going on too with a brutal revelation about sexual abuse that happened in the family! It shows that there is more depth to this franchise than just Tyler Perry being the wild and crazy grandma!
Family Reunion Dynamics
Now you may be thinking, why the heck is this called Madea’s Family Reunion as I have not mentioned the family reunion once! Well, there is a family reunion here and that is what the family is gearing up to attend. However, the movie is more about the drama in the family surrounding this family reunion than the reunion itself.
A Unique Entry
To be honest, Madea’s Family Reunion is not a bad movie at all, and far from being one of the worst movies in the Madea Cinematic Universe. It has a good mixture of comedy and some pretty serious and brutal drama stuff too. I can see why some people may not like it, but at the time this was released, the character of Madea had not been done to death yet, which is what has happened now!
- I enjoyed the stuff with Madea and Nikki
- Keke Palmer is a lot of fun and does a great job in this movie
- I can see some people finding the more serious stuff in the story interesting
- There are far worse Madea movies than this one!
- I do not know why, but this movie has a very “budget” look about it
- The whole family abuse storyline that is the main focus goes a bit too far and dominates the story too much
