I remember when Magic Mike was just about to be released and there was a lot of buzz around it. Not just because the ladies were going wild for a movie about hot male strippers, but because by all accounts the movie was actually really good! I have to say that I was really into the first Magic Mike movie and think that even ten years later it is a good watch.

The Movie Review
I will say that I do think that Magic Mike XXL is the best out of the three movies. However, I will say that the first Magic Mike is just behind it, and then the final movie is not even in the conversation! Anyway, released in 2012 and directed by Steven Soderbergh, many people were shocked at just how good this movie was.
The main character is Mike. Played by Channing Tatum, Mike has dreams of opening his own custom furniture company, but he supports himself by stripping for a guy called Dallas in one of Florida’s premier clubs. Dallas is played by Mathew McConaughey and he has dreams of having this huge empire and he is pretty much willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen.
Mike soon meets a young guy called Adam whom he takes under his wing. Adam is a good-looking guy and Mike convinces him that he should give stripping a go. Adam starts as a likable guy, but there is just something about this dude that rubbed me the wrong way for most of the movie.
Mike strikes up a friendship with Adam’s sister, Brooke and she is ultimately the main love interest, even though Mike has a thing going with a chick called Joana. Brooke makes Mike promise that he will look out for Adam and try and keep him out of trouble, which Mike agrees to.
However, things are complicated as Adam starts to fall into a seedier lifestyle of the stripper way of life with sex, drugs, and rock and roll! It drives a wedge between Adam and Mike, even though Mike is trying to do right by him and look out for him like he said he would. Mike has had enough of stripping and just wants a way out!
I think that while people may come to a movie like Magic Mike to see the hot strippers do their thing. It is the characters and their relationship that actually get people invested in what is happening here. I like the comradery of Mike and his stripper buddies, but I do feel Magic Mike XXL does this much better. I also feel that this first movie plays things just a tad too seriously and they loosened things up much more in the sequel.
I watched Magic Mike again recently and had a great time. It was probably the third time I had seen this movie and I still enjoyed it. I know I have said it a few times, but I do feel Magic Mike XXL is the best movie, they struck a much better balance of comedy and drama with the second movie…. And then flushed it down the toilet with the last one!
