Magic Mike’s Last Dance

I liked Magic Mike and I liked Magic Mike XXL even more! I was not sure a third movie was necessary, but hey, it could be fun! If I am being honest, the way my wife talked me into watching Magic Mike was because it had wrestler Kevin Nash in it who I am a big fan of. I was glad she did as both movies were funny and also had a lot of heart too.

How to Download Magic Mike’s Last Dance

You can expect to be able to download or stream the film from HBO Max sometime after its theatrical release which happened on 10 February 2023. Click on the Download button at the end of this review and check the current availability. If you like Channing Tatum, check him out also in 21 Jump Street and The Lost City. Salma Hayek Pinault’s fans should see her in Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard and Eternals.

The Movie Review

Sadly, Magic Mike’s Last Dance was one time too many as this is not a very good movie. It takes place a few years after Magic Mike XXL and Mike has lost his business during the pandemic. Also, on a side note, I am sick of movies and TV shows referencing the pandemic, I had to live through it, it sucked and I see no need for my entertainment to keep referencing it!

Mike is getting by in Miami where he is working as a bartender. It is not the best life and he is clearly not happy with the way things have turned out. As always, Channing Tatum is impossible not to like. I have to say that it was kind of a bummer to see how his life turned out after the events of Magic Mike XXL.

During an event, the very wealthy Max (Selma Hayek) recognizes him and asks him how much for a dance! He wants no part of this so throws out a crazy number and she agrees to pay it! Max then offers Mike a ton of money to come to the UK so he can train a group of dancers for a big show that she has planned.

I am a huge fan of Selma Hayek and Channing Tatum, but the pair have zero chemistry here. I hate to say this as I think she is great, but this is probably the worst performance from Selma Hayek I have ever seen! It just feels so unnatural and so phoned in that it is impossible to get invested in it. Sure, she looks like a million bucks as always, but that is not enough to carry this movie.

A huge part of the reason why Magic Mike’s Last Dance does not work is that the comradery from the other movies is missing. I loved Mike and his dancer buddies and while we get a cameo here from the old cast, that fun comradery is all pretty much gone! It sucks and I hate the way that it is implied he has just been ghosting them for ages.

Instead, we have a new group of dancers for him to interact with and I could not care any less about any of them. As a matter of fact, the new dancers were so forgettable, I could not tell you the names of any of them! However, I could tell you the names of the other guys from the last two movies and do it with a smile on my face as they were so entertaining.

I will say that the ending dance of the movie is great and they do dangle a bit of mystery with Max having an ulterior motive. However, 90 percent of the movie is just dull as dirt and I found it a real struggle to pay attention and keep invested in what was going down, and from what I have heard I am not the only one. I would not recommend making the effort to go and see this one in the theatre at all.
