While Marty Supreme had been advertised very heavily, there was just something about it that was not all that appealing to me. I did not think that the movie looked bad, but there was nothing making me feel like I had to make an effort to see it in the theatre. Well, I had a mid-week day off, and it was down to one showing at my theatre, so I thought, what the heck, and I gave it a chance.

The Movie Review
To be honest, I had heard nothing but good things about this movie, but I was still very impressed by just how fun and how utterly insane this movie was! I knew that it was loosely based on a real pro table tennis player and that Timothee Chalamet was the star, but apart from that, except for what I saw in the trailers, I felt like I had seen a million times, I was going into this pretty blind.
Marty Mauser: A Table Tennis Dreamer in 1950s New York
Our main character is a young man called Marty Mauser, and the setting is New York in the 1950s. Marty works in his uncle’s shoe store, but he is also a pro table tennis player, and he dreams of making the sport a big deal in the USA. He feels that he can do this if he can get to London and compete in the world championships. We also see his entrepreneurial and hustling side here as he has the clever idea to merchandise himself with some fancy orange table tennis balls.
A Wild Ride Through London, Love, and Lies
The movie goes off the rails pretty quickly. Needing money to get to London, he robs his uncle’s store and then, when in London, he fraudulently gets himself situated at the fancy Ritz hotel! Hey, it gets even crazier as he then meets an actress called Kay, who is played by Gwyneth Paltrow, and he starts an affair with her. There is no doubt that Marty is a fantastic table tennis player, but drama has a real way of finding him.
Complicated Relationships and Rising Stakes
His affair with Kay is made more complicated by two factors. First of all, Kay is married, and secondly, Marty has a thing with his high school friend in New York, and she is pregnant! Marty also gets involved with some gangsters, as well as falling into trouble with the pro table tennis organization. I get that this sounds like an absolute mess of a movie, but it flows very well and is just so entertaining, right from the start. This movie is pretty high-energy.
Why Marty Supreme Works Despite the Madness
Granted, Marty is a pretty wild character, and he is not exactly what you would call a Boy Scout. However, I found Marty to be a very likable character, and you wanted to see him succeed. I think they did a fantastic job bringing the movie to a close, and it left me with a huge smile on my face. I can see why so many people were raving about this movie, and I would not be shocked to see it win more than a few awards.
Chances are, by the time you are reading this, Marty Supreme has finished its theatrical run. But I highly recommend that you give this a chance if it is on one of your streaming services. It was never a case of me thinking that this was not going to be good, but even though this got many rave reviews, I was shocked by just how entertained I was by it.
