Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is a blockbuster action/adventure film and is the fourth entry in the Mission Impossible franchise. Ghost Protocol introduces yet another new creative leader to the series, this time Brad Bird takes a shot in the director’s chair this time around.
Brad Bird is no stranger to explosive and entertaining action films, having previously directed the major Pixar hits The Incredibles and the Incredibles 2. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol continues to follow the over-the-top operations of the Impossible Mission Force (IMF), led by the experienced and agile Agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise).

The Movie Review
The story in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol picks up with Ethan locked up in a prison in Moscow. Luckily, a team of IMF agents is successfully able to break him out, and in the process uncover more information on a rising terrorist threat.
During Ethan’s prison visit, the IMF has been tracking a terrorist threat code-named Cobalt, rumored to have the capabilities to incite nuclear war. In an effort to learn more about Cobalt, Hunt recruits a team for a mission at the Kremlin. Helpful hacker Benji (Simon Pegg) returns, providing his signature brand of lighthearted cheeriness, along with newcomer Jane (Paula Patton).
Unfortunately, the mission at the Kremlin goes south, resulting in the complete disavowal of the entire IMF. With just his original team and chief IMF analyst Brandt (Jeremy Renner) left, Ethan and the crew travel across the globe to discover Cobalt’s true plans.
There’s a significant amount of mystery in Ghost Protocol’s plot, which carries the overarching narrative throughout several intense operations. Generally speaking, the plot is more compelling and engaging than in previous films, reviving the long-missing element of intrigue that made the first Mission Impossible film so great.
There are several major sequences that revolve around deception, manipulation, and non-lethal tactics, resulting in some seriously cool and suspenseful moments.
The element of intrigue is held together by a well-written script, with playful bouts of dialogue that feel grounded and believable. From Benji’s jovial jabs to Brandt’s stoic yet firm comments, Ghost Protocol’s story is littered with quality lines and quotable moments.
Luckily, the action in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is just as good as the story, presenting viewers with an abundance of high-octane chase scenes, fist-fights, and explosive encounters. Although the story starts in Russia, the majority of the action takes place in Dubai, including an awesome operation at the towering Burj Khalifa skyscraper.
The IMF team eventually jumps to Mumbai, India, as well, providing some exceptionally colorful scenes. Throughout the entire flick, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is inventive and exciting, giving viewers some of the best-looking action scenes in the entire series.
While Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is a direct continuation of the previous films, it feels like a bit of a soft reboot. The tone feels more confident, the direction is solid, and there’s great chemistry across the entire cast.
It doesn’t include any groan-worthy romances, the dangers feel real and consequential, and there are plenty of bombastic action scenes. While there is still a bit of room for improvement, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol represents a major turning point for the franchise.
It picks up the groundwork that was laid by the previous film and continues to mold Mission Impossible into an action-packed, blockbuster spy series that’s reliably entertaining. Even if you disliked the previous Mission Impossible films, Ghost Protocol is worth watching.
