Murder Mystery

I am a big Adam Sandler fan, while I think his ’90s stuff is his best work, I still enjoy much of the stuff he releases these days. Adam Sandler has had some fun movies made for Netflix over the last few years and Murder Mystery is a movie that is part of the deal he did with the streaming service.

The Movie Review

Overview of Murder Mystery

It actually has a pretty solid team behind the camera with the script being written by James Vanderbilt and the movie being directed by Kyle Newacheck, one of the creators of Workaholics. I am a big fan of Workaholics so I was excited for this movie based on that alone.

Star-Studded Cast and Performances

Murder Mystery on paper also has a great cast. We have Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in the lead roles, but we have a great supporting cast with the likes of Luke Evans and Gemma Arterton. To be honest with you Murder Mystery is not a bad movie at all, but I will say that if you are not a fan of modern Adam Sandler movies, you are not going to like this at all!

Critical Analysis of Murder Mystery

The problem with the movie is that it is just so forgettable! It has some laughs and it is a good popcorn movie where you turn your brain off and have some fun. As you would expect from a modern Adam Sandler comedy, there is pretty much zero depth here, but that does not make it bad!

The Storyline and Humor

Something kind of amusing is the title, it is pretty much exactly what this movie is! We have a husband and wife in Audrey Spritz who is a hairdresser and loves murder mysteries and she has a husband, Nick who is a cop. Nick and Audrey have been together a long time, but you feel like they are in a rut. Nick is not 100 percent honest with Audrey as he tells her that he planned a trip to Europe ages ago and that he is also going to be a detective, both of which are lies!

Adventure and Intrigue in Europe

However, as he is caught, he has to hastily book something to Europe and this is where they meet wealthy playboy, Charles Cavendish. Charles invites them to his uncle’s big birthday bash which is taking place on a boat. It is a super weird set of circumstances, but they go along with it and are amazed at the life of luxury they are now experiencing.

The Mystery Unfolds

In no time at all, Charle’s uncle, Malcolm winds up murdered. Everyone on the boat is a suspect and Nick with his cop training tries to take over. I think that Nick and Audrey work really well together, him being an actual cop and her being obsessed with murder mysteries makes them a fun pair of detectives.

Final Thoughts on Murder Mystery

Look, Murder Mystery is never going to win any awards, but I would not say that the movie is trash! It is a fun and silly whodunnit kind of movie that has some funny humor and it never takes things too seriously. At the end of the day, it is a typical modern Adam Sandler movie, if you find them fun and get enjoyment out of them, give this a try.
