My Best Friend’s Wedding is classed as an all time classic in the romantic comedy genre. More often than not if you see a list of the best romantic comedies of all time, especially if it is focused on the 90s, this will be on it. My wife loves this movie and it is one of those movies she has seen a million times. I enjoy a romantic comedy as much as the next guy, but this is one that I have never understood the appeal of.

Controversial Takes on a Beloved Rom-Com
Now, before you come at me with your pitchforks, let me say my piece. I can see why some people like and love this and if you do, more power to you, but I hate it and I mean hate this movie. I have probably seen this four times over the years and each time my opinion never changes. Make no mistake about it, I have given this movie a chance! So many people love it that I have watched it more than once, thinking I have to be missing something.
The Cast and Characters
Let me start with what I do like about My Best Friend’s Wedding. This movie has a great and fun cast. We have Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz, and Rupert Everet all doing what they do best. Dermot Mulroney is charming as ever as the leading man. Cameron Diaz is stunning, bubbly, and super likable and Rupert Everet is hilarious as the gay best friend.
You may notice one name missing from my quick little run down of the main cast, Julia Roberts. Julia Roberts is the star of this movie and she plays the role of Jules. Jules is nearing 30 and many years ago, she and her best friend, Michael said that if they were still single at 28, they would get married.
The Plot’s Controversy
Guess what, Jules is just about to turn 28 when Michael calls her and tells her that he is getting married to a young woman called Kimmy who is played by Cameron Diaz. Realizing that she is madly in love with Michael, Jules starts a plan to stop the wedding, tell Michael that she loves him, and be with him forever.
Ok, is it just me or is this the most selfish and crazy plan ever? From what I understand people who love this movie think that it is charming, fun, cute and so emotional. I just see a garbage human being in Jules who is trying to ruin her supposed best friend’s life and also the life of a perfectly nice woman in Kimmy!
Final Thoughts on My Best Friend’s Wedding
This may sound harsh, but I just do not get the love for Jules at all. Jules is one of the most unlikable female lead characters I have ever seen in a romantic comedy. Actually, I am making a declaration right now, that I cannot think of another supposed “good” character that I dislike more than Jules.
Spoilers ahead here people, but to be fair, this is a movie from 97 so I do feel that I am off the hook as far as spoilers go. Even though Jules “does the right thing” in the end… she only does it because Michael clearly loves Kimmy and wants to be with her! If you ask me Jules does not get off the hook and become a good person. The wedding only went ahead because Michael loved Kimmy and not Jules. Jules would have happily broken up these two and ruined the wedding if Michael had been willing to run off with her.
Ok, that is it, I am all fired up now and need to go and do some press-ups or go for a run. My Best Friend’s Wedding is one of the most unlikable romantic comedies that I have ever seen. Sure, it has a few funny moments and three of our leads are great. However, I cannot get past what a piece of garbage Jules is. I know I am in the minority here and if you enjoy this movie, I am happy for you, but this is one of my most hated movies of all time!
