I stand by saying that Omen III: The Final Conflict is not a terrible movie, but 1991’s Omen IV: The Awakening is easily my least favorite in the series. The most interesting thing about the movie is probably the way that it was distributed. In the USA, this was a made for TV movie. To be honest, once you know this, I think that it is pretty obvious this movie is a made for TV movie.
How to Download Omen IV: The Awakening
Omen IV: The Awakening was released on May 20, 1991. You can download or stream the film from a digital platform. Click on the Download button at the end of this review and make your choice.
The Movie Review
However, in other parts of the world, such as the UK where I live, Omen IV: The Awakening was given an actual theatrical release. Even the home release of this movie is kind of weird, for the longest time it felt like the only way to get it was in the Omen collection, but now you can find it for like five bucks on DVD on its own.
The Plot: A Decent Idea with a Creepy Twist
I think that they had a decent idea here for a movie. Set many years after the death of Damian Throne in The Omen III. We have a married couple, Karen and Gene who are desperate for a baby, but they cannot get pregnant so they adopt a baby girl called Delia from an orphanage.
While at first things seem normal, as Delia gets older, she starts acting out and Karen gets the impression that something is wrong with her. I am going into spoiler territory here so be warned before you continue reading! These weird hippie like people detect that there is something wrong with Delia, these “hippie” characters are unintentionally hilarious by the way.
The Big Reveal: Delia’s Role in the Antichrist Prophecy
With things getting weirder and more dangerous, Karen starts to come to terms with the fact that there is something not right about Delia. Now, you think that Delia is the new Antichrist as we find out that she is the daughter of Damian Thorne. However, there is a really cool twist in Omen IV: The Awakening.
You see, Karen has become pregnant, but it turns out that her doctor is a Satanist and impregnated her with the embryo of Delia’s twin! Delia is there not to be the Antichrist, but to protect her brother who will in fact be the new Antichrist. On paper, this sounds awesome, but the problem is, this movie is so slow paced and there are long periods where nothing of any real interest actually happens. It is not bad, it is just very boring in places.
The Attempt to Revive the Franchise Falls Flat
In watching this again recently, I get the impression that the intent here was to kickstart a new Omen series with Delia and her brother, Alexander as the bringers of doom. The thing is, people really did not like this movie and it pretty much killed the franchise until the 2006 Omen remake came out!
Final Thoughts: Why It Falls Short
As I said, I love the idea of the movie and the young actress who plays Delia is pretty awesome and very creepy. However, this movie really lacks the thrills and chills that you got in the other movies, especially The Omen and Damien: Omen II. Despite this being my least favorite of the Omen series, I would not say that I hate the movie. Yet, if I am in the mood for an Omen marathon, I will more than likely skip this and go straight to the 2006 remake.
