I watched Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire over Christmas break and found it to be a fun sci-fi action movie. Supposedly, this is based on a more mature Star Wars movie that Zack Synder wanted to make, Disney said no and it turned into this and Netflix picked it up.

The Movie Review: Zack Snyder’s Signature Style
If you dislike Zack Snyder’s style of filmmaking, you will not like this as it has everything you expect from a Zack Synder movie, big loud action, way too many characters, and lots of slow motion! In many ways, he is like Michael Bay where you either tend to like him or you do not.
When you look online, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire has mostly negative reviews, but I think most of the reviews are way too harsh. Is this movie amazing? No, but it is not terrible either. It is a fun sci-fi fantasy-style movie, kind of like Star Wars meets Final Fantasy, that is the way I would suggest you think about it.
The Plot and Characters of Rebel Moon
Our main character is a farmer called Kora who is played by the stunning, awesome, and badass Sofia Boutella. Kora lives on a small moon called Veldt which is a farming colony where people live in peace until the fascist forces of Motherworld show up. Think of these guys as a more extreme version of The Empire or even straight-up space Nazis and you will have an idea of what to expect.
They picked the wrong place to try and muscle in on! You see Kora is not just a farmer, she is a former soldier and she kicks some major ass and sends the Motherworld forces running. This leads Kora to start a quest going around the galaxy to find people to fight alongside her and protect Veldt.
The Galaxy and Lore of Rebel Moon
It is a fun premise and the movie is pretty much her going from one area to recruit a new member to her team, getting to know them a little, getting into a fight, and then moving on to the next one. It is dumb and fun stuff, but one thing I do not think Zack Synder is getting enough credit for here is the galaxy and lore that has been created
This galaxy that has been created here with all these planets and races is really cool and I am excited to learn more about it when the next part drops which as of writing is scheduled for April 2024. I know that when this movie was announced and it was said it was going to be a big multimedia franchise kind of rubbed some people the wrong way, but I kind of dig this and think that Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is a solid start.
Visuals and Audience Reception of the Film
I also think that 2023 was a year where a lot of big-budget movies had less than great CGI, but the special effects here are not bad at all, there are some very noticeable CGI sections, but for the most part, the movie looks great. There is a lot of imagination here and the mixture of sci-fi and fantasy makes for a pretty cool-looking galaxy.
As I write this Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire has a 59 percent audience score on Metacritic. I think that is far fairer than the stuff critics are saying about the movie. For me, this is a fun sci-fi fantasy movie and one that I kind of wish I was able to see on the big screen. Do not listen to the negative reviews, if you enjoy action and cool stuff, give this one a try, it may surprise you.
