Samaritan

I am always done for some Stallone and as a kid growing up in the 80s, he was a huge hero of mine. I think that he has done some great movies over the years and it was a nice surprise to see Samaritan pop up on Amazon’s Prime Video service. This is a superhero movie, but not one that is tied to Marvel or DC so that was pretty interesting.

The Movie Review

I ended up watching Samaritan with my son and it was cool to see his reaction to it. In many ways, it reminds me of an action movie that I would have rented from the video store back in the 90s. It is a fun time and the story does have more heart and a pretty good twist as well.

The story of the film is set in a place called Granite City. Granite City was once protected by a hero called Samaritan. Samaritan was thought to have perished many years ago while fighting his arch nemesis who is actually called Nemesis. They were fighting and a fire broke out and neither one was seen since.

An interesting aspect of the story of Samaritan and Nemesis is that they are twins and the difference between the two is quite staggering. The city has pretty much gone to hell over the years since Samaritan disappeared. Crime is high and things like common decency and looking out for your fellow citizens is not the done thing in this city anymore.

One day a 13-year-old boy called Sam notices something odd about his old neighbor, Mr. Smith. Sam suspects that Mr. Smith is actually Samaritan and that he has been hiding and living as a regular man over the years. Sam tries to get Mr. Smith to admit that he is Samaritan and comes up with some fun ways to prove his theory right.

Of course, the plot for the most part is as predictable as they come. However, it is still a fun movie and the chemistry between Samaritan and Sam is pretty fun and certainly something I would have loved even more when I was a kid. The action scenes are well done and Stallone plays an aging superhero perfectly.

The movie is rated PG-13 and it was actually way more violent than I thought it would be. I am not saying it is bad or inappropriate for kids or anything like that, I was just surprised and impressed that the action scenes went as far as they did. I was more than ok with my son watching the movie. It would have been easy for them to cut away or edit the action scenes differently, but they did not and I am glad about that.

Samaritan is a solid action movie and one that my son and I both enjoyed. Stallone is great as Samaritan and while it is a predictable movie, it is still a fun one. If you do have Amazon Prime, I highly recommend that you check this one out as it is a fun popcorn-style action movie and they do not really make many moves like this anymore.
