Have you ever wondered how Keanu Reeves ended up becoming such a Hollywood heartthrob, despite the fact that he got his proper career start with Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure? Well, there is only one answer to that question, and that is Speed. When it originally came out in 1994, Speed was such a cinematic triumph, such a huge blockbuster film that it turned Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock into household names.

The Movie Review
With a fearless nature and a sharp mind, Jack Traven, an LAPD cop on the SWAT team, has outsmarted the criminal elements time and again. However, fate has a twisted sense of humor, and this time it has dealt him a deadly hand. An elusive bomber-extortionist, Howard Payne, seeks revenge after his latest ransom plot is foiled. He has chosen Jack as his opponent, setting a lethal game in motion.
Payne’s weapon of choice is a bomb rigged on a city bus, set to detonate if the speedometer drops below 50 MPH. Annie, a poor unwitting passenger, is thrust into the driver’s seat while Jack races against time, his wits, and the ticking clock, to save the day.
Speed is fast-paced and action-packed, with plenty of tension and suspense in each and every moment, at every single plot twist and turn. The film keeps the audience engaged and invested in the story by constantly introducing new twists and turns that completely change the situation they’re in.
The themes of the film revolve around the importance of quick thinking and resourcefulness in the face of danger, and it stays true to them from beginning to end. The film also explores the theme of the thin line between heroism and recklessness, which adds depth to the characters and makes them more believable. The themes are well-handled, and it adds to the connection you can feel with the characters.
The writing is tight and efficient, with a well-crafted script that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The dialogue is also well done, with strong performances from the cast. The script is well-written and the pacing of the film is excellent. It flows smoothly from one scene to another, and it keeps the audience engaged throughout the film. The dialogue is also well-written, with lots of iconic one-liners and quips being thrown around.
The dialogue is made even better with the standout performances from Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. Keanu isn’t really the best actor out there, I’ll say that much, but he fits the character here and he does a good job. Sandra Bullock on the other hand is just as lovely as she always is in every single role she takes on.
The chemistry between the two leads is also strong, adding depth to their characters. The cast also includes a great performance from Dennis Hopper as the villain, who delivers a chilling performance. The cast is talented and they bring their A-game to the film. The acting is one of the highlights of the film.
The Visuals
The cinematography is a bit iffy though. I mean – It is absolutely top-notch when it comes to shooting great action sequences that are both exciting and visually stunning. The stunts in the film are also well done and add to the excitement, and the choreography is simply amazing.
However, there’s a problem with the regular shots and the shots of characters outside or away from the bus. They simply look way too mundane to be considered artistic in any way. The movie has a great visual style otherwise though, it’s well shot and well lit, but if only they made them more creative.
The Music in Speed
Mark Mancina’s compositions add to the overall intensity of this horrifying joyride. The score is well-composed and it enhances the film’s action-packed and fast-paced nature. The soundtrack is intense and fitting for the high-octane action and suspenseful storyline. The use of drums and percussion adds to the sense of urgency and danger. The music also adds a layer of emotion to the film and helps to elevate the dramatic moments. However, it can tend to get a bit overbearing at times, and it can also become a bit repetitive.
Verdict
In summary, I think that Speed is a well-crafted action thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout its run time. It has a fast-paced story, a well-crafted script, and strong couple of performances from the cast.
There are also visually stunning action sequences and well-done stunts with well-composed music on top, All of this makes for a thrilling and exciting watch. Of course, Speed isn’t without its flaws though, there are some minor but very annoying issues such as the lack of creativity in some shots, and a consistent repetition in the overbearing music.
