Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere

Another year, another big-time music biopic, this time we are looking back at the career of The Boss, Bruce Springsteen. One of my earliest music memories is the Bruce Springsteen album, Born in the USA. Not so much the rocking tunes that Bruce Springsteen is famous for, but the iconic album cover, we had it, and I remember it being played all the time in my house.

The Movie Review

Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere is brought to us by Scott Cooper, who wrote and directed the movie. I will not try and pretend that I am some kind of Bruce Springsteen mega fan, but I do like many of his songs. Let me get this out of the way right now. This movie is for those who are already familiar with the career of Bruce Springsteen.

Who Is This Bruce Springsteen Movie Really For?

There are some music biopics that I feel anyone can watch, no matter if they are a fan or not. This one, I hate to say it, but I think those who know nothing about Bruce Springsteen will be pretty bored watching this. I certainly noticed a few restless people in my theatre when I was watching this, and they were on the younger side.

Focused on the Creation of ‘Nebraska’

Rather than focusing on his entire life and career, the movie is focused on a specific point in his career in the early 80s. Bruce is already a star; he has just come off a successful tour, but he is not the mega star that he would become in the mid to late 80s. There are times when we get a quick flashback to give context to a certain scene, and I think this was a clever way to show a few moments of his younger days.

Bruce is feeling a bit down, and he wants to make his next album a more stripped-back and somber kind of thing. It is his sixth album, Nebraska, and the mental state he was in at the time, which is the main focus of things here. Bruce wants to record this much darker and less produced album.

The Clash Between Art and Commerce

However, his record label has other ideas. The record label does not see any huge hits on Nebraska and instead is pushing for Born in the USA to be the next release. To be fair, the record label was right, as it was Born in the USA, which skyrocketed Bruce Springsteen to superstardom! However, this is a real artist vs the label kind of thing, as he is more concerned with making a record that means something to him.

Jeremy Allen White Shines as Bruce Springsteen

Jeremy Allen White is fantastic as Bruce Springsteen. I was already impressed with him after playing one of my childhood heroes in The Iron Claw, and once again, Jeremy Allen White nails this performance. I was interested from the start until the end. I knew going in that this movie had a very specific part of Bruce Springsteen’s career and life that it wanted to tell.

Somber Tone and Audience Expectations

Those who are looking for something more will probably be a little disappointed. Especially, if you are wanting to see a happy-go-lucky mega rockstar kind of Bruce Springsteen, as the tone here is very somber. I would not say it is my favorite music biopic, but I think it was entertaining. Still, it is very easy for me to see why some people were not into this and found it a little on the slow and boring side.
