The Film Review
Sully is directed by Clint Eastwood and features an all-star ensemble cast who all do a great job. I have yet to be disappointed with a single movie that Clint Eastwood has directed and I always feel that gets very real performances from his actors.
The star of the movie is Tom Hanks who plays the title role of Sully. There are some other notable performances though such as Aaron Eckhart who plays Jeff Skiles, the co-pilot and Laura Linney who plays the wife of Sully.
The story of the movie is that on a fairly routine flight, birds fly into the engine of the plane. This forces Sully to think on his feet and he decides that the best chance they have for survival is a water landing on the Hudson River. This part of the movie is done very well and even though you know what happens it is still very tense and has you on the edge of your seat.
The actual landing of the plane on The Hudson River is just one part of the movie. It is how this event affected Sully that really packs the punch. An investigation is launched by the National Transportation Safety Board. Now I do not know the real ins and outs of this organization, but in terms of this movie….. they are the villains!
It comes across like they are trying to trip Sully up and like they almost want to prove that he did not need to land on the Hudson River and that he could have made it to a runway. They come off as very unlikable and it makes you see Sully as a hero even more. There is some controversy with this as the organization did not like being portrayed in this way. All I can say is that it makes for a much better movie with them being more against Sully.
Laura Linney who plays the wife of Sully comes off as very unsupportive and unlikeable. I am not sure if this is intentional if this is how she is written in the book or what! In terms of the movie though she comes across as cold and not very nice to Sully at all. I have to wonder if his wife in real life saw this movie and what she thought of her portrayal.
I do think that for a movie having his wife not offering him the rock that he needs and also the NTSB being out for his blood was the right call. It makes you really root for him even more and when he is vindicated and proven to be a legit hero who saves the lives of over 100 people it makes you want to fist pump in the air and cheer for the guy.
Sully is a really good movie and one that is a great watch. The performances are all fantastic and while it may not be 100 percent accurate (I cannot say for sure on this) I can say that it is a movie that had me hooked from the start to the end.
