The Film Review
The Plot
The film is initially set in the year of 2029 where Skynet sends a T-800 Terminator back to 1984 in order to kill John Conner’s mother Sarah. In retaliation, Conner sends his right-hand man, Kyle Reese, to the same timeline in order to stop the T-800.
Kyle travels back in time only to see the T-800 model being disabled by a young Sarah along with Pops -a reprogrammed T-800 sent to protect Sarah when she was nine years old-. Another terminator called the T-1000 comes forward but is defeated after the trio pours acid on it.
Sarah then reveals that they have a time machine of their own and how they are planning to travel to 1997, the year when Skynet became self-aware. Kyle realizes that the timeline has changed and consequently convinces Pops and Sarah to travel to 2017 to stop Skynet once and for all.
Pops and Sarah agree after which, the trio implements their plan only to find a false John Conner who, in reality, has been transformed into a terminator himself by a T-5000 who was disguised as a Resistance member.
Pops shoots down the false Conner after which, they head towards Skynet’s headquarters. It turns out that Skynet is now termed as Genisys due to the change of timelines which caused the future to change and that Genisys is now planning a worldwide attack the next day of their arrival.
At the Genisys headquarters, Kyle and Sarah plant bombs at the core points whereas Pops engages in a final battle with the T-1000. Kyle and Sarah manage to escape but the explosion takes out both Pops and T-1000. Pops manages to survive and helps the others escape. The film ends as the trio travel to Kyle’s childhood home where he tells his younger self about Genisys, thereby securing their arrival from 1984.
Terminator Genisys: the Movie Production
Of all the explosions and helicopter crashes, the most significant feature displayed in the film was the creation of a young Arnold Schwarzenegger. Fans were surprised to witness a completely redesigned realistic Arnold throughout the film, fighting against terminators as he did in his youth.
To create this so-called illusion, Terminator Genisys’ visual effects team hired a young 27-year-old bodybuilder whose measurements were similar to Arnold in his youth. On top of his body, the team digitally created Arnold’s face by getting him to do a photo shoot and then transforming the resultant photos by combining them with the 35 shots that were taken during production specifically to accommodate Arnold’s appearance.
In total, the film generated over 1200 visual-effect shots and the main companies involved in the whole process consisted of Double Negative, Moving Picture Company, and Industrial Light & Magic.
The Music in Terminator Genisys
For the film’s main score, the filmmakers hired Lorne Balfe, a Scottish artist, who claimed that his score was something unique and which completely on its own.
The Bottom Line
Overall, Terminator Genisys managed to do well at the box office by generating over $440 million. Regardless, the film still could not live up to the hype and standard which had been set up by Terminator 2.
