Terms of Endearment is a movie that took me a very long time to get round to seeing, but I am so glad that I did. I have no idea why I never watched it for all these years as it has an amazing cast and it is brought to us by James L. Brooks who I am a big fan of. Based on a very popular novel, Terms of Endearment is a movie that will make you laugh and it will also break you heart as well.

The Movie Review
The Heartfelt Story of a Mother-Daughter Bond
The movie is mainly about the relationship between a mother and daughter. Shirly Maclaine plays Aurora a widowed mother to Debra Winger’s Emma. Aurora and Emma have a very complicated, but real feeling relationship. They clearly love each other to death, but they also get on each others nerves and Emma finds Aurora to sometimes be to much and controlling. Emma eventually marries Flap Horton who is played by Jeff Daniels.
Love, Struggles, and Heartbreak
Emma and Flap move away for Flap’s work as an English professor and they start to have a family of their own. Emma and Aurora still keep in touch once Emma has moved away with her family and Aurora has started a thing with a man called Garrett who is played by Jack Nicholson.
Family life is not all that Emma thought it would be. Emma has troubles with Flap as she is convinced that he is having an affair, which in turn sends her into Jon Lithgow’s arms! There are money troubles and a whole lot of stress and before long, Emma wants to move back home to be closer to her mother. No spoilers, but there is some absolutely brutal heartbreak for Emma that even though when you know what is going to happen, I am sure many people still tear up over this.
The Emotional Impact of Terms of Endearment
While there is a lot going on with Emma and her marriage and Aurora and her relationship with Garrett. At the end of the day, Terms of Endearment is a movie about the love between a mother and a daughter. Sure they may drive each other nuts sometimes, but at the end of the day, they have this bond that is just unbreakable. The ending is so well done, it manages to make you sad and happy at the same time. Many other movies try to do stuff like this, but not many can say they pull it off as well as this does.
I did a bit of a deep dive on this movie after I watched it as I liked it so much, I was shocked to see that it was number 2 at the box office in 1983, only beaten by Return of the Jedi! Also, it absolutely cleaned up at the Academy Awards as it was nominated for a ton and it won five of them!
Where to Watch and Download Terms of Endearment
You know, I am glad that I watched this on Amazon Prime as I was going to get the DVD as it was cheap. However, now that I have seen it and I really enjoyed it, I think I am going to add the 4K of this to my collection. While this was my first time watching Terms of Endearment, I am sure I will have watched it again before the year is out, who knows, maybe it will be on my Christmas list this year!
