The Art of Racing in the Rain

I picked up The Art of Racing in the Rain on a whim after finding it cheap while out grocery shopping. It stars Milo Ventimiglia who I am a fan of due to This is Us as well as Amanda Seyfried and Kevin Costner, two other people I really like. Plus, it had a dog on the front cover so that is always a plus.

The Movie Review

Now, I will admit, apart from the cover and what I read on the back, I knew nothing about this movie. Had I not been in the grocery store picking up some stuff, I still would not know this movie existed. I thought it would be a good family drama, but I was so shocked when at the end of it I had a lump in my throat!

Enzo’s Tale

The movie is about a dog called Enzo who gets his name from his owner Denny who loves racing and named him after Enzo Ferrari. The movie is narrated by Enzo who is voiced by Kevin Costner and he does a great job of bringing his lovely old Golden Retriever to life. The movie is basically Enzo narrating his life which right away tells you where this is going!

A Heartwarming Family Story

This is just such a lovely movie. We get to see a young Enzo and Denny bond before a lovely young lady called Eve comes into their life and they become a trio as Denny marries her. Denny has dreams to become a race driver and he is making that dream happen, but it takes him away from home for long periods at a time, even missing the birth of his daughter Zoe.

Emotional Journey

I do not want to go into spoilers here, but family and love are really what this movie is all about. I do think that it is a pretty predictable movie as you have an idea where it is going from the start. However, the ride to get to the end is about as emotional as you can get and it certainly will tug on your heartstrings, especially if you love dogs.

Outstanding Performances

There are some great performances here, I hated and I mean hated Eve’s parents Maxwell and Kathy played by Martin Donavon and Kathy Baker because they played their roles so well. To be fair, it was mainly Maxwell and by the end of the movie, I was hopeful that Denny would punch him right in the face, but to be fair, that would not be in the spirit of the movie at all.

Well-Paced and Heartfelt

I know that the whole dog narrating a movie thing has been done before, the format kind of reminds me of Love the Coopers/Christmas with the Coopers in the way the dog is telling the story of a family. The movie comes in at a little over an hour and a half and I think that is perfect as the pacing is great. Everything that needs to be said is said and nothing feels like it is there just to pad out the runtime.

A Hidden Gem

It is always awesome when you randomly pick up a movie and then you end up really liking it. I liked it so much, I think if I ever see the Blu-Ray at a good price I may be tempted to pick it up. If you love dogs and heartfelt dramas about family, I highly recommend that you give this one a try as I thought it was great.
