Released in 1981, The Four Seasons is a movie that not only stars Alan Alda, he also wrote and directed it too. This is a movie that I have had the DVD of for probably the better part of five years! Actually, probably longer as I know I had it a few years before Covid! Anyway, it was one of those movies that I picked up on a whim at the supermarket cash register, my supermarket always had a box of cheap DVDs and I thought this looked interesting.

The Movie Review
A Movie from My Collection
I had never heard of it, but I have been trying to watch movies that I have bought that I have not yet seen to see if I want to keep them in my collection, and that is how I finally came to watch this. I would describe The Four Seasons as a slice of life style comedy. I would not say that there were many scenes that made me actually laugh, but it did get a few chuckles out of me.
A Story of Friendship and Change
This is the story of three couples. We have Jack and Kate Burroughs, Danny and Claudia Zimmer, and Nick and Anne Callan. These three couples have been friends for years and each season/quarter they go on a vacation together and the movie is basically about the changes that happen over the course of a year.
These in many ways are your typical middle-aged couples, but their status quo is rocked when it is revealed that Nick is thinking about leaving Anne. Nick not only leaves Anne, he hooks up with a much younger woman called Ginny and now Ginny is the one who is going on vacation with them.
The Funniest Scene and Seasonal Trips
They rent a cabin in the woods in the Spring, but after this, Ginny starts to accompany them on their trips instead. The funniest scene is when Ginny and Nick are having very loud sex and it keeps the other two couples up at night. The final trip of the year seems them heading to a ski resort.
Relationships and Personal Growth
The best part of the movie for me was the stuff with Anne and Ginny and how their characters and relationships changed. Anne kind of falls apart and feels abandoned by Claudia and Kate and feels pretty lost, however, she does turn it all around. Ginny on the other hand I felt was treated pretty badly by the rest of the group and she seemed super nice and tried her best to fit in, Ginny winning over the group and becoming a friend rather than just the “other woman” was a nice way for it all to come to a close.
A Timeless Movie
I actually quite liked this, it was a fun movie about life and a movie that even though it is from 1981, is very easily relatable to today. The cast all did a great job and while I would not say it was the funniest movie I have ever seen, I still did like it. The best compliment that I can give the movie is that it has managed to survive my movie purge as I liked it enough that it is going to be kept in the collection.
