Recently I reviewed The Muppet Christmas Carol which is not only one of the best Christmas movies of all time, it is the best Muppets movie. That made me reminisce a little about the other Muppets movies and for some reason, The Great Muppet Caper came to mind as I could not really remember a great deal about the movie so that made me decide to fire it up on Disney Plus.

The Movie Review
A Look Back at the Second Muppet Movie
This is the second Muppet movie, coming out in 1981, just two years after the original The Muppet Movie. To be fair, I do not think that any of the Muppet movies are bad and if I were ranking them, I think I would probably put The Great Muppet Caper third or fourth on my official ranking list. However, I have a buddy who swears that this is the greatest of all The Muppets movies! Oh, I should probably also mention that this was the first movie that Jim Henson directed so that is pretty awesome.
I think that the heist style plot of the movie is a ton of fun. Kermit and Fozzy are two investigative reporters who along with Gonzo who works as their camera guy. I love the gimmick of Kermit and Fozzy being twins and the whole thing with Fozzy having to wear a hat for people to think that they are twins is something that made me smile.
Anyway, the trio messes up reporting on a big heist and Kermit suggests to their boss that they head to London to London to interview Lady Holiday, a big-time fashion lady who is the victim. They can report on the crime and they will also have an interview with the victim. Their boss agrees and they head to London.
Miss Piggy Steals the Show
There is a mishap and Miss Piggy who is working as an assistant, convinces Kermit that she is in fact, Lady Holiday. How can you not love Miss Piggy? The stuff with her trying to prove that she is this super-rich London fashion lady is hilarious, especially when she pretty much forces herself into this fancy London townhouse.
As you would expect, this does not go as she planned. However, things get worse as Miss Piggy is framed for the robbery and it is down to our trip of reporters to try and prove her innocence and capture the real thieves! This is just a really fun “caper” that ticks all the boxes of what you would want in a Muppets movie.
Statler and Waldorf: The Comedy Kings
One of the very best things about The Great Muppet Caper is the schtick with Statler and Waldorf. I love Statler and Waldorf and the way that they pop up to rip on the characters in the movie and the audience is something that I think is hilarious. These guys are a highlight of many Muppets movies and episodes and I would put their stuff up here as the very best.
A Nostalgic Rewatch
I was not sure how this would hold up, it had to have been 20 plus years since I last saw The Great Muppet Caper, but I am happy to say that I had a blast watching this. The plot may be a tad on the predictable side, but the characters and the general Muppet’s antics more than make up for it. I will say that on Disney Plus, I am not sure what version of the movie they are streaming, but it looks kind of rough.
