When it comes to monster movies, we are living in a bit of a golden age. In the last few years, we have had The Invisible Man, Wolf Man, Nosferatu, The Bride, and now a new take on The Mummy. Granted, if you think these new takes on the classic monster movies are good is all down to personal preference, but for the most part, I have enjoyed these, and I thought that The Mummy or, or Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, as it is called, looked pretty weird and interesting.

The Movie Review
Blumhouse Production & Title Choice
This being a Blumhouse movie had me very excited. Still, I must admit, I felt that there was something very pretentious about having the director’s name in the title, especially when he only has a couple of movies to his name. Granted, they are two awesome movies in Evil Dead Rise and The Hole in the Ground, but it still felt strange to me. To be fair, I get that just calling this “The Mummy” may have confused some people, especially as there is apparently a new Brendan Fraser Mummy movie in development.
Family Setup in Cairo
Talking about the movie is kind of tricky, as this is so different from any other Mummy movie, and I do not want to spoil it for you. Our main characters are a husband and wife, Charlie and Larissa, who is pregnant, and they also have a daughter, Katie, and a son called Sebastian. They live in Cairo, where Charlie works as a reporter.
The Disappearance & Eight-Year Time Jump
Katie has been getting visits from a strange woman whom she calls The Magician, but her parents have no idea about this. Well, Katie is kidnapped, and although Charlie tries to catch her, he loses track of her in a sandstorm. The police in Egypt are not all that helpful and even suspect Charlie and Larissa of some wrongdoing! The movie then fast-forwards to eight years into the future. Things are tense for the family; they have moved back to the USA to live with Larissa’s mother in Albuquerque, and they now have a new daughter called Maud.
Katie’s Creepy Return in a Sarcophagus
Out of the blue, the family gets a call to say that Katie has been found. This is super weird and creepy as Katie is found, but she is in a sarcophagus and wrapped like a mummy, and she has clearly been through a ton of trauma. The family is just delighted to have her back, and they do not want any more tests done on her or any more questioning; they just want to bring her home and be a complete family.
Escalating Horror & Standout Performance
You completely get why they want to do this, but at the same time, you are also screaming at the screen as they are ignoring a ton of red flags. Things start to get weird and dangerous, and the reveal of what happened to Katie and what she now is was not something that I saw coming. There are some brutal moments in this movie, and Katie is so freaking creepy. I honestly cannot give young Natalie Grace enough credit for how awesome she is in this movie. Also, the whole thing just keeps building up, up and up to the point you wonder how the heck it’s all going to end!
Final Recommendation & Pacing
I would not say that Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is a perfect movie, but it is one that had me hooked. I did think that it dragged in some places, and they probably could have shaved ten or so minutes off, and it would have flown much better. However, despite that being said, I was very entertained, and it was one of those movies that really had me invested in wanting to know just what the heck happened, and the reveal did not disappoint! I get that this is a weird reimagining and that may be a stumbling block for some people to give it a chance. But if you are in the mood for a creepy horror, I highly recommend checking it out.
