The TV Series Review

This creepy story focuses on the Crain family, a seven-piece family who moves into a notoriously haunted house one summer. The parents, Hugh (Henry Thomas) and Olivia (Carla Gugino) aim to renovate the house and flip it for a profit. During the summer, the five children explore the house, discovering a variety of unexplained phenomena.

Each character has their own terrible fear, and the show does a great job covering each one. For example, the young twins Nell and Luke see full apparitions, while the older Theo comes to grips with a possible psychic connection.

It’s a show that covers a vast range of supernatural happenings and digs deep into many different phobias. Regardless of what you’re scared of, The Haunting of Hill House will bring those fears to the surface.

One of the most interesting parts of The Haunting of Hill House is its narrative structure. Although the story follows the Crain family living at the Hill house, it also focuses on their lives years after the events in the house unfold.

During the summer at the house, the children are young and jovial, and the parents are hopeful and excited. When we catch up with them decades later, they are all suffering from mental illness or dealing with the trauma that happened at the house.

The show effortlessly flips back and forth between the timelines, creating an interesting duel plot. As we uncover more about the family in the past, their problems in the current day seem more believable.

The Haunting of Hill House is held up by a solid script, but that script is fully realized thanks to all-star performances from the entire cast. Every actor and actress do their best to become invested in their character, and most of the performances are surprisingly effective.

This goes doubly for the child actors, who outshine even the most seasoned of adult actors. Carla Gugino does a tremendous job as the all-seeing mother of the family, Olivia. Her performance carries most of the past sequences, but every scene surrounding the kid characters is flawless. There’s a true innocence in their performances, and that makes the terrifying revelations even more frightening.

Overall, The Haunting of Hill House is a visually exciting television series with an emotional and terrifying story. It effortlessly tells two different stories in two time periods, rarely stumbling or confusing the viewer.

The scares are honest, and although there are a handful of jump scares, the more effective moments are quiet and disturbing. There’s plenty of horror imagery that will stick with you for many months to come, and as a horror fan, that’s a huge boost.

Luckily, the scares aren’t the only great part. The story is impressive and relatable, and the characters feel honest and human. If you have Netflix and you’re interested in a little scare, you should definitely check out the Haunting of Hill House.
