The Pope’s Exorcist

The Pope’s Exorcist was a movie that as soon as I saw the trailer, I knew me and my wife had to go and see the opening weekend. This is based on the “real” stories of Father Gabriel Amorth who was the top exorcist that the Vatican had to offer. I thought the idea of this movie was just so cool and I am happy to say that it did not disappoint.

The Movie Review

Now, while I enjoyed The Pope’s Exorcist, modern supernatural movies, especially ones that deal with demons and exorcisms have to live up to the awesome Conjuring movies and that is no easy task. I watch a ton of movies about demons, exorcisms, and stuff like that and this is easily one of the best I have seen lately.

I am not going into spoiler territory here, but what you see in the trailers is pretty much what you get. Father Amorth is not just the best exorcist around, he is literally the guy the Pope calls when a demon needs to be put in its place. I loved the way that the movie dived into the “lore” of the way the Vatican handles exorcisms. I am sure it is all greatly exaggerated, but I found it fascinating

Father Amorth is a fantastic character. He is not what you would expect when you hear that this is the Pope’s go to guy. He has a bit of an attitude, he rides a motorcycle and he is not scared to do things that the Vatican does not approve of. He is willing to do whatever it takes to save a soul and send a demon to hell.

The twist in this movie is that the possession he is dealing with is one that the Vatican does not want to get out and it will shake and test him to his very core. As I said, if you have seen the trailer for The Pope’s Exorcist, you know what to expect. However, there are some shocking twists here that I did not see coming so it does still manage to keep you on your toes and wonder what is coming.

While there are some fun jump scares in The Pope’s Exorcist, it is not the kind of movie that is going to have you jumping out of your skin the whole time you are watching it. It is more of a feeling of unease the whole time you are watching it with the odd moment of white-knuckle terror here and there. It was something that I and my wife had a lot of fun with and I am glad we saw it in our theatre.

Now, while this is a good movie and we had a lot of scary fun with it. I am not sure it is the kind of movie I would be in a rush to watch again. However, a year or two from now when this is probably on some kind of streaming service, I would definitely watch it again. If you love some demonic possession in your horror movies, give this one a try, just do not blame me if you have a hard time sleeping after!
