I have some very fun memories of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie! I remember going to see this in the theatre with my girlfriend, now wife at the time. SpongeBob is a kid’s show, but it is a kid’s show that adults like too. We were in our early 20s at the time and there were plenty of other adults in the theatre without kids and it was a lot of fun to see.

The Movie Review
Nickelodeon had some theatrical success with their Rugrats movies and with how popular SpongeBob was, it was a no-brainer that SpongeBob would make the leap to the silver screen. Also, I kind of hate looking at movies like this as in my mind they are just a couple of years old, but this movie is nearly 20 years old as I write this, which means I am old!
The plot of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is one that on the surface is a very typical SpongeBob kind of plot. Once again, Plankton is trying to steal the Krabby Patty formula, but he also has a plan to get rid of Mr. Krabs once and for all. I have to say that I think Plankton is a character that has grown considerably over the years, becoming a bit more of a frenemy than a straight-up villain.
Anyway, Plankton ends up framing Mr. Krabs for stealing King Neptune’s crown and he is going to be executed for it! As a premise for a SpongeBob movie, I do feel like this is perfect and while it could have been something they could have crammed into your average SpongeBob episode, I do think the extra runtime they have with this movie lets them be much more creative.
Of course, SpongeBob is not going to allow this to happen and he and Patrick end up going on a quest to Shell City to get the crown and save Mr. Krabs. I would say that The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is kind of like a road trip movie with SpongeBob and Patrick getting into all kinds of trouble along the way.
I love the sense of humor that this movie has. In typical SpongeBob fashion, kids will love this. There are also some fun stuff that the adults will like too, that may go over the kid’s heads. I remember getting a laugh out of Princess Mindy saying that she will take SpongeBob and Patrick and “turn them into men” Of course, my mind went into the gutter, but she gave them mustaches, which was hilarious.
They have all of the voice cast from the show which is great, but they do also have some Hollywood talent here too. We have Scarlett Johansson as Princess, Mindy, Jeffery Tambor as King Neptune, and Alec Baldwin as Dennis. We even have David Hasselhoff as himself which I got such a huge kick out of the first time I saw this movie.
As I write this, we have three SpongeBob movies and I would certainly put The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie as my favorite. I watched this again recently and still found it to be a very fun time. This movie is pretty much exactly what you would expect from a movie about SpongeBob SquarePants and I mean that in a very complimentary way.
