The Strangers: Chapter 3

I feel like Dr. Sam Becket when I say “oh boy” as we start this review off! The Strangers: Chapter 3 is the third, and what I am assuming is the final part of the Strangers movie series. The fact that this trilogy got made is kind of mind-blowing in all honesty, with you and I am sure that it will be studied for years to come.

Where to Watch The Strangers: Chapter 3

The Movie Review

The Strangers Franchise Overview

The 2008 movie, The Strangers, which was written and directed by Bryan Bertino, was a fantastic and very tense home invasion thriller/horror movie. The tension of that first Strangers movie was awesome, and the fact that we did not know a great deal about the titular Strangers, along with their creepy masks and slow, methodical movements, made them pretty damn terrifying. It had a modest budget and did fairly well commercially and very well in terms of what horror fans thought of it.

Well, it may have taken ten years, but in 2018, we got The Strangers: Prey at Night. Bryan Bertino did not direct, but he did have a major hand in the story. I may be in the minority here, but Prey at Night is my favorite Strangers movie! It is more of a straight-up slasher than the original movie, but it is one hell of a thrill ride, and the way that the protagonists turn the tables on the Strangers was very cool. However, despite my loving it, Prey at Night did not do quite as well at the box office, and it did way worse critically.

The Strangers Chapter 3 Full Review

That brings us to The Strangers: Chapter 3, 2026, marking the third year in a row that we got a Strangers movie. The first one was not great, and the second one was straight garbage if I am being honest. Also, Ryan, the boyfriend of our heroine and final girl, Madeline Petsch’s Maya, is one of the worst characters I have ever seen in a horror movie. I swear I kept expecting him to show up in the second or third one as one of The Strangers!

The Strangers: Chapter 3 was filmed back-to-back with the first two, making it all one story. To be fair, this, like the last one, has a great intro where we get to see the Strangers doing what they do best. However, like the second one, this goes downhill very fast. I am honestly at kind of a loss in regards to what to say here.

I guess if you really enjoyed the first two movies, this is more of the same, so you will probably like this too, and more power to you. There are plenty of panned movies that people hate, which I love, so I get it. Maya is once again trying to outwit and survive from the Strangers, but we get a little more backstory and fleshing out of the characters here, and to say that it is weird is an understatement.

The whole covering up of the Strangers by the law enforcement made no sense to me, and the part where they try to swerve us at the end, did anyone actually fall for that? You know, I think the character of Ryan in that first Strangers movie really soured me on this whole new trilogy. I am not saying that they would be amazing without this character, if he were less of an idiot and less of an asshole. But his character really turned me off in that first movie.

Final Thoughts on The Strangers Chapter 3

These movies, from what I have seen, have all had a modest budget, so I do think that this new Strangers trilogy has not been a complete bust. There is something there with these characters, The Strangers, I mean, not the other people, so I would not be against them trying again at some point. At the end of the day, if you made an effort to watch the first two, you may as well finish the story here.

The Strangers: Chapter 3
The Strangers: Chapter 3 is a tense but flawed horror sequel that continues Maya’s fight against masked killers while expanding the trilogy’s strange story arc.
